This mutt isn't fasting though. One of the joys of being half Jewish is I get to pick & choose what I will & won't observe. ;)

Well, I'm 100% Jewish, and I still pick and choose. ;) I'm with you, Laura. But I do have to go to my SIL's house for the break-fast. The processed plastic-looking slices of turkey roll are actually the BEST thing on her menu! :eek:

Yikes! We're going to my Grandma's to break the fast. She promises bagels and lox...hope the bagels are "real" bagels, but I fear the worst!
 
LOL! You guys are too funny! What is it about Jewish food? I swear, my relatives are the worst cooks on earth--my aunt makes a lasagna that tastes like cardboard. I mean, how the hell can you mess up a lasagna? :eek: And I have such a hard time finding anything with any TASTE to it.............except chicken noodle soup, YUM! ;)

Jodi, what kind of bagels do you have in Atlanta? Are there chains, or can you get them in bakeries?
 
Bagels are tricky here...they are easy to find, but they are not always good. You can get decent, but not great, bagels at the grocery store bakeries or costco bakery. There are a couple of chains that have not so great bagels but that the locals actually think are good (those people need to have real bagels sometime to see what they're missing!)

There are two bagel places that have very very very good bagels, but because they are run by Jewish grandmas (of course), they are closed on the holidays.

I am hoping that my Grandma at least got the bagels from the Publix bakery, and we aren't having Lenders. But I fear that it will be Lenders:p

edit: Actually, I can think of a few more good bagel places, but they are not really that close.
 
Public bagesls are pretty good but we actually like the Kroger's bagels even better. Love their whole wheat bagels.

jodijodi - Are there any places close to Kennesaw?

Laura, you may not believe this, but last week I had dinner at a Jewish relatives house and the chicken soup tasted like hot water. The matzoh balls had lots of flavor, but the flavor was awful! How do you ruin chicken soup? :rolleyes:

It is a fact: most Jewish people are born without taste buds. :p
 
Marcy, there is a place in Marietta that was pretty good, off of Sandy Plains. Not that close, I guess, and I can't even remember the name now. Sorry!

My DH is an exception to that rule. He actually impressed an Italian restaurant owner a few months ago by telling him the ingredients of a soup that he was eating. He got almost all of them!

Jewish food, when cooked well, can be fabulous. Brisket, roast chicken, Matzoh ball soup, etc. Unfortunately, so often it is not cooked well. And I think that some of our older relatives, who used to be better cooks in their younger days, have lost a lot of their skills--and their taste buds--due to age. So sad!

edit: I am so hungry...I need to stop thinking about food!!!
 
OK I'll give you the brisket, but only when I'm not considering fat content. ;) I so feel for you about the bagels--do you remember Sonny's? It's still here, 2 doors east from where I work. Bagel Chateau is 2 blocks west. :) OMG I'm making myself hungry!

I think Nancy is right about the taste buds. It's a genetic thing. Whenever my dad & I order out from a pizza place he gets a hamburger. WTH? You can't order a burger from a pizza place! That's like buying Old Spice at Neiman Marcus. :eek:
 
Here's a question for you Laura: is Oheb Shalom (I think that was its name) still on Scotland Road? My dad worked there, and I used to live across the street.
 
I'm going to smuggle some of my own turkey and some Weil bars into my SIL's house in my purse. I'll either eat them on the train or in the bathroom. I would eat her food if I could, but it makes me gag. I'm such a friggin' princess. :rolleyes:

Oh yes, it's still there--it's causing quite the traffic delays last week & this. :p OMG you didn't live in that fabulous split level on the corner of Scotland & Randolph?

Nancy, you are cracking me up--I keep having these visions of you stuffing non-kosher food in your mouth on the sly! :D
 
No, we were I think the third house in from the corner. It was a split level. (This was 21 years ago, though.)
 
I just looked on Google maps...it was 3 houses in from the corner of Ralston and Scotland, #169. Still looks about the same.

edit: it is so weird that i can see a picture of the house just like that!

I know! Google Earth freaks me out. Anyone who knows your address can watch you anytime they want. :eek:
