Hi.

I rarely post, but I do enjoy reading everyone's comments. Recently I decided to try some yoga because of continued stiffness and comments that stretching really helps to prevent injury. I bought Brian Kest's power yoga and I love it. So, thanks to those who suggested it. My question is can you all suggest some other yoga dvds that are similar or maybe different to complement the one I have? Also, I've been almost exclusively using stretches that Cathe uses. My inner thigh, hamstrings, and glutes are still tight on days I don't do the yoga and I do lower body weights. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Tracy

yoga shakti with shiva rea. it has 4 premixed practices as well as the yoga matrix which is like workout blender to make your own practice. there are some pretty advanced moves in it but its a great dvd to work with. right now amazon has is fairly cheaper at $18.99 it was $23 last month so the price might be coming down. i also enjoy yoga complete for everybody from http://www.bodywisdommedia.com i would say its more of stretching while holding yoga poses but there are TONs of practices on there making it worth the money. kind of yoga shakti but without the option of making your own workout. still very very good nonetheless. i just recieved rodney yee's yoga burn but haven't tried it yet. i also enjoy better sex through yoga. i have volume 3 the advanced so its alot of balancing and its not a mind-body,well a little bit but not like others. its pretty good yoga with some toning exercises for buttocks and abs.

i have a few others but nothing i make a big deal out of like kabbalah yoga(both of them),iron yoga, and yoga complete for atheletes(can find this one at the same site as yoga for everybody). you should be able to see clips at bodywisdommedia's site for their yoga videos and collagevideo.com has a short clip of iron yoga as well as a few rodney yees. for more previews of rodney yee's try http://www.gaiam.com site. they also have yoga with other instructors but i haven't tried them so i can't say much on those.

I just bought a few that came highly recommended and received praise on the Amazon website. I bought Karen Voight's Yoga Sculpt, Bryan Kest (which you seem to enjoy already) and I also bought Iron Yoga. While they came highly recommended by experts on this forum, I cannot comment. I just received them yesterday and have not done them yet. I'll do one tomorrow and another on Sunday. Amazon.com has some pretty good prices and I like the "review" section.

HTH!!

Eion Finn's "Power Yoga For Happiness" is good. It is a 2-DVD set, and there are several workouts available (like "premixes" on Cathe's DVD's). I did "magically hips" a couple of weeks ago, and it's a very nice hip opening routine. I like the sequence of moves and the fact that he encourages us to do whatever level of move fits our bodies and our flexibiliy at the moment. Several levels of moves are shown by the class (which includes a few "guest appearances" by a little dog doing some poses!).

I also like Body Wisdom's "Yoga For Athletes." It has a lot of different options, including beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, and workouts for various parts of the body or various sports. The poses aren't linked together as in most ashtanga yoga, but are separate, so they can be mixed and matched to form the various options (ie: the "warrior" pose is the same footage in all the advanced workouts). When I previewed the DVD, it didn't seem as interesting as others, but when I did some of the workouts, I found the instruction to be excellent (a voice-over by a female instructor). Very professional, and giving what seem to be just the right cues at just the right time. Body Wisdom has several yoga DVD's that are set up in a similar fashion.

Hi Tracy. I will say what I always say first: get to a few yoga classes (preferably at a yoga studio) and then go from time to time so you get your form and breath correct. You will get the most out of yoga if you are aligned properly. Whenever I go to class I learn something else that helps so much/

I would add to the great suggestions here Baron Baptiste dvds. I like Journey Into Power II, which is about an hour. He has a few that are 45 minutes and 30 minutes (Soul of Strength is one) and all are great. Check out his web site baronbaptiste.com.

I suffer from very tight hamstrings, hips and lower back problems and have to say doing yoga consistently has been a huge help. Also has helped to alternate workouts from week to week so that I minimize stress on those areas. Good luck!

My current favorite power yoga DVD's are:

Eoin Finn - Power Yoga and Power Yoga for Happiness
Bryan Kest - Power Yoga Series (you mentioned already)
Baron Baptiste - Soul of Strength
Power 90X Yoga X - Beach Body (Tony Horton)
Rodney Yee - Power Yoga (I'm not sure if this is the whole title - it was released a couple years ago)

I make it a priority to include yoga in my rotations. It has done wonders for my flexibility and core strength.

Thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions. Off to DVD buying on-line to see what I can get and where.

Hi Tracy:

I started my yoga collection by printing off Soosan's list from a previous post--great advice, thanks!

Here's my collection:

Eoin Finn's Power Yoga for Happiness

Bryan Kest's Power Yoga series

Rodney Yee
"Yoga Conditioning for Athletes" (60 min.) Wonderful stretching for when you really want a good, thorough stretch but don't need to work too hard--like during Cathe's January rotation. The first section is so fabulous for stretching the back. DVD also has 5 mini sports workouts (all under 10 min.).
"Power Yoga Total Body" (60 min.)
"A.M. Yoga"--gentle, short practice for when you wake up feeling like you got hit by a truck. DVD also has P.M. Yoga with Patricia Walden--good for nice, post-workout stretching.

Suzanne Deason
"Stress Relief Yoga" (18 min.) Great, gentle stretching for post-workout--especially if you don't modify.
"30 Minute Quick Start Yoga for Weight Loss"--easy practice good for stiff bodies and early mornings.

Baron Baptiste--I just started with him in December. I really like his practices, especially for hamstrings, hips, and back.
"Soul of Strength" (60 min.)--The most challenging Baptiste I have. Wonderful practice.
"Trainer's Edge Long and Lean Yoga" (50 min.)
"Journey into Power 1" (30 min.)--short enough for after workouts (some days, anyway).
"Journey into Power 2" (45 min.)--longer with more poses.
"Core Power" (30 min.)--just got, haven't done yet.
"Unlocking Athletic Power" (30 min)--I got this because I'm always on the lookout for shorter practices I can do post-running or Cathe. I did this for the first time today after running and it was PERFECT! Not too challenging, but a great stretch--especially for running. Great for the hips!

Deep Discount DVD has many of the Baptiste and other practices for great prices.

Good Luck,

Carol F
