Why are paper plates used?

Apologies if this has been explained before:

Could Cathe / SNM / ANYONE explain the purpose of using paper plates in some of the STS drills? And will paper plates work on a semi-rough textured carpet? (Actually an old, beaten-up Turkish area rug.)

TIA -

A-Jock

That is the same thing the “Guys” in STS keep asking Cathe. They have learned to fear the “Paper Plate”.

But seriously, Cathe has spent a tremendous amount of time analyzing just about every exercise you can think of for the lower body over the last year for the STS program. With STS Cathe wanted to select only the very best exercises and the paper plates exercises came in at the top of the list. When you finally get to do the STS Leg programs you will get to see what I mean. Either plastic or paper plates will work, but plastic will probably be your best bet. You just need to do a little test to see which is best for your surface.

i don't know if i can explain the techincal stuff but i have quite a few mindy mylrea workouts that use plates/disc. you get some good range of motion and the muscles are always working to balance. i find, personally, i get deeper in a lunge with the help of the discs. and push ups are OMG the way mindy uses them with the plates/discs. i didn't see any pics on the blog but i wonder if cathe will use them for push ups at least in meso 1.

Kassia,

What are the plates you use? I have berber carpet in my workout room and think plastic plates may be the way to go.

TIA~

I love paper plate work - it does indeed produce quite a burn. LOL at the guys have come to fear the paper plate - HA!

I have puzzle mats in my workout space, and I have plastic/styrofoam plates, which do not slide at all over the mats. Whenever I do floor/ab work I have a large beach towel that I fold and use in place of a yoga mat. For plate work, I simply spread that towel on the floor area, and the plates slide beautifully over the surface. If the towel bunches - it's easy enough to put a dumbell down as an anchor.

Hi everyone...here is a link to Mindy's Gliders if you'd like to see them. I have them and they work great on carpet. They are:

$10.00 for VHS version
$13.00 for DVD version

The kit comes with three workouts. Unfortunately, the S/H is expensive and comes out to:

$22.00 (VHS version)
$25.00 (DVD version)

I would suggest you check your Walmart which is where I got mine. I am thinking I paid $15.00 for the DVD version. You really do feel the muscles work deep when using these and I can't wait to see all the ideas Cathe comes up with. Here is a link to check them out:

I've done these types of moves with Mindy Mylrea workouts and Tracie Long workouts. I find that, as others have said, you can go deeper into lunges, but also that when you slide into and out of a lunge, the non-moving leg works more than when you step into a lunge, and works more throughout the entire ROM of the move : all the way down and all the way up, rather than mostly on the push-off.

I'd say the move becomes more like a one-legged squat than a regular lunge.

So true Kathryn....my students always complain about the non-moving leg hurting more then the moving leg. (Hurt, in a good sense!)

P90X has a set of pushups with the paper plates - and it is amazing how you feel the muscles continualy engage while sliding the arms in and out to the pushup position. Think of the clock pushups from 4DS but with consistant pressure on the hands when moving to the side.

I can see how it would totally increase the muscle fiber usage and the stability of the lunges.... although it does scare me at the same time... LOL...

Just so that I understand:

The paper plates are to enable whatever is in contact with the floor (foot or hand) to slide into a new position? I thought it might be to create a more unstable contact surface for the foot / hand / whatever is on the floor forcing stabilization work.

Thanks again for any further responses!

I too have used the plates and I finally went and purchased the gliding discs for carpet from Amazon. I do think they make a set of these for floors too. Today I saw some oval shaped gliding exercisers that looked like they do the same thing as gliding discs at Target. I think that the gliding discs were a great investment. I tried styrofoam plated the first time and they cracked and fell apart.

Do the paper plates stick on your shoes while you are sliding, or do they sometimes slip off? Should you tape them on the plates somehow?

Also, when I drag my feet in the house with my slippers on I touch things and get a little static shock. Wouldn't this happen with the paper plates, and especially plastic plates if you use those?

If I buy gliders, what are they made of, some kind of plastic? I'd be afraid to use them in the winter -- all that sliding around producing a bunch of static  .

Maybe it's just me...I get shocked pushing the car around at Costco!
When the wheels roll on the floor the electricity travels up the cart the up to the handle and produces a shock on the handle and my hands about every 3 feet(not too fun!!)

I have a cut berber(I think that is what it is called) that I'd be doing the sliding on.

thanks,
Linda ;-)

LOL! Linda, I've been reading this thread thinking the EXACT same thing as you! And I, too, get shocked from pushing the grocery cart! LOL My kids laugh at me all the time!

I'm wondering what's going to work for ME, since I have puzzle mats on a concrete basement floor! Heck, when I pick those puzzle mats up just to rearrange them or clean them, I get shocked to high HEAVEN! LOL

>The paper plates are to enable whatever is in contact with the
>floor (foot or hand) to slide into a new position?

Yes, that's exactly it.

I found this explanation at health.com:

Gliding Discs
What they are: Purple, plastic discs (think Frisbees) that go under your shoes or hands (the pressure from your body weight keeps them in place).
How to use them: Just place the discs under your feet for cardio or lower-body-strength work, or under your hands for upper-body exercises. Then slowly slide them in various directions.
Expert view: One big plus is that the discs allow you to target multiple muscles—including your core—as you work out, depending on which direction you move. They also help you perfect your balance. Careful, though: The discs give most beginners that slippery, “first time on skis” feeling, so Vogel suggests learning the moves without the discs first. Once you do become discborne, try to avoid sliding too far beyond your normal range of motion.

Hope this helps!
