Who Are You Going to Show a Small Measure of Appreciati...

Okay. I'm a pre-op and Day Surgery nurse at a hospital but our dept also does outpatient labs. Some of our regular patients have brought us a little token of their appreciation this season as in many other seasons. Now, while I have always given a few goodies here & there to friends, co-workers & such I can't recall giving the mailman, my hairdresser, the cafeteria worker that serves me generously , anything special to show my appreciation. Am I behind in the times? I live in a big city, was raised in an even bigger city. I tip good (really good) but I have never put a personal touch to it or a seasonal touch. What are you guys doing if anything. Have I completely forgotten someone? And don't tell me my doctor. They are spoiled enough already.

The mailman and/or paper deliverer (is that a word?) should get a little something, although I think postal workers are not allowed to accept cash - not sure about that. Maybe leave a gift cert. to the local grocery store or book store? As for the hair stylist I'd only do that if it was someone who'd been cutting my hair for years and even then I'd just pad her tip around the holidays, or do a small amount gift certificate. If you have kids in grade school then their teacher should get a little something, or a regular babysitter. Other than that I can't think of anyone else.

On the same topic (sort of), I was totally surprised by a gift from a friend today - normally we don't do xmas gifts but she gave me a $50 gift cert. and some chocolates, and I had nothing in return for her...grrr, I hate being caught off guard like that. Should I get her a gift or just send a thank you?

God! That is is so rough!!!! What do you do with a friend? Please more replies. I wasn't expecting that.

But with my Newspaperboy. That! is a big reminder. I religiously respond to the newspaper. Thank You!for reminnding me how much I should appreciate them. I used to be a newspaper thrower for a few months while I was in college. Believe me, I do not take these people' paychecks for granted. That money does not come in until it it comes in.

I appreciate what the mailpersons do, but they are paid very well and I don't feel obligated to tip them at all. I DO tip accordingly for good service in a restaurant AND I tell the manager when a server does a good job.

I do leave some goodies for my mail lady. We live in a very very small tall that closely resembles Mayberry! So...yes I do leave some homemade baked goods for her. I have also given baked goods to our waiter to our eat out place. He is our regular waiter and gives us (on occasion) breaks --wink wink-- on the ticket. So, a little something for him is thoughtful in my opinion. But, let me tell you....it's completely unexpected for both of them! I read somewhere that the most underappreciated people are service people. So..that is when I made the vow to think of them during our busy times. So, at Halloween they get a good bag of misc. stuff, Easter, and Christmas they get goodies as well. But, it's definately unexpected for them.

Just my 2 cents....
