I love my protein shakes - love them a lot. anyone know if its ok to still have whey protein while pregnant? I don't see why not.....

Hi there,
Honestly, I would not touch that stuff while pregnant. Protien shakes is not 100% natural and has a lot of fillers in them. They also are overdone in vitamins which can be very harmful to fetuses. Fetus is still growing and developing, protien shakes can screw up their cells, brain cells, etc. I drank shakes before I got pregnant, stopped while pregnant and nursing then went back to drinking it once a day after I weaned. There are plenty of other food that has protien you can eat without using the shake. Just for the peace of mind, I'd stay away from it until the baby's born. Same for protien bars as they contain some chemicals in them that will likely harm the baby. Personally, it's just me but I prefer to be all natural and organic while pregnant and nursing. After that, I do whatever I want. Good luck and hope this helps!

Yikes thanks - I've still been drinking the stuff and making home made protein bars with whey protein! Yikes. I just love the stuff - blended with ice, strawberries, blueberries...yummy! thanks for the help

Lynn,

I don't specifically know about whey protein during pregnancy, but I did notice this morning that during a commercial for Carnation Good Start Formula, they advertised that it contains whey protein.

My gut instinct says to read the container label carefully for any warnings. If their aren't any warnings, then go ahead, but make sure you have a variety of protein sources in your diet.

Yes, whey protien is good for you as it came from milk BUT it doesn't mean protien powder is good for you like Myoplex, Optimum, Isopure, etc....If you can find 100% whey without any added ingredients, I think you'll be fine. I wouldn't bother asking the doctor as they don't know everything. Some think it's safe to use splenda and aspartame while pregnant. I don't agree but I digress. Most labels doesn't have any warning for pregnant women drinking it but it doesn't mean it's safe. Use your common sense and gut instinct. All I can say is better safe than sorry. If you have Trader Joe's near you, they have a canister of 100% whey protien.

thanks for your help. I'll carefully check the label at home for warnings. but I'm thinking - maybe just to be safe rather than sorry later.

ok just got off the phone with 'mother risk' hotline - run out of a local hospital here. they have all the latest studies on what to eat/ not to eat while pregnant, what type of drugs to avoid etc...

they said whey protein is fine!
