When did you consider yourself an athlete?

After working out for 2 years I finally feel like I am truely an athlete. I think it was when I switched from The Firm to Cathe and could do PLB w/my heaviest weight at 40 lbs when it clicked for me. Then this fall I reached the longest run ever for me, 5.5 miles. I am so excited and feel so great about my body and the HUGE changes it's made in the last two years. My husband a few months back made a side comment to me, that my body looked like an athletes - gotta love that guy! I feel like I can finally take on the title athlete, and it be true. Anyway when did this dawn on you?

I'm still waiting on that one. Every time I think I might be one, I try to throw a baseball and it goes only about 3 feet and 45 degrees away from where I was aiming.

A few weeks before my black belt test (which was in May) when I was out on a high school track practicing (I was 30) and one of the teenage girls I was training with asked me if I was the "sporty" one when I mentioned my twin sister thought I was crazy for doing tae kwon do.I thought, "the sporty one?" After surviving the crazily physical black belt test which included 3 solid hours with no breaks of demostrating all the technique's we'd learned - my sister is still traumatized on my behalf from watching that ;) and a 90 minute conditioning/torture fest (which I survived and didn't fear - all thanks to Cathe), I think of myself as an althlete! :)

I would be tempted to say when I completed my 1st marathon in March of 1997, but seriously I felt like an athlete way back in High School when I was a Junior and got the "Ace Serving Award" from my friends on the Volleyball team...:)...Carole

I was always involved in team sports back in high school, but I guess I first really felt like an athlete when I played college volleyball. My school was only Division 2, but we were the top team in our division for all four years. I still have all my little trophies on a shelf in our home office (and I graduated in 1987!).

Although people wouldn't think this upon seeing my body, I've always seen myself as fit. The first time I considered myself an athlete was when 2 months ago, when my obstetrician heard my heartbeat, asked me, "Are you an athlete?" I was so over the moon to hear that, it meant a lot more to me than someone complimenting me on how I look. :7

I am no means an athlete. I did start running a while ago and if I keep that up I might be near an athlete.

It is inspiring to read these replies. I love the one about the doctor asking if you are an athlete. I think that is the ultimate benefit--good heatlth.

I am enjoying reading these replies. Someday maybe I can be an athlete too.

thanks,
Lori

In 1993 when I climbed the Grand Teton by the Exum route with my then fiance, now husband. It was a test of endurance, strength, willpower, and technical ability. It was the hardest physical feat I had ever accomplished. Since then I've climbed mountains all over the world and I feel like a world class athlete when I enjoy the view from the top of every last one of them.

Interesting replies and I never thought about it. I have always considered myself an athlete regardless of any athletic achievement I had gotten.
I guess being a 3 sport guy in high school was a highlight. Being looked at by pro and college baseball scouts and having colleges want you to play for them was kind of neat. My highlight is probably having my doctor tell me I had the lowest resting HR he had seen in 15 years...

I don't consider myself to be an "athlete" but it very recently dawned on me that, at 42, I just might be "athletic."

That realization was thrilling to me! I am not naturally strong or athletic. I never passed the President's Fitness Test in school, I was usually chosen close to last for team sports and I've always been a slow, awkward runner.

I recently participated in the beginner's flight of a round robin tennis tournament and found myself to be better than all of the other beginners. I won a second place trophy (the first athletic trophy of my life!), and the first place winner said to me at the awards banquet, "I figured you've been playing all your life like me but never progressed to the more advanced flights either." I told her that I was a total beginner and never played as a child and she was surprised. I also recently started taking a dance class with some friends and find myself to be better than most of the others. If it weren't for all these years of working out, I'm sure I'd be one of the worse ones in both activities.

Persistence pays off!

I have always thought of myself as some what athletic. In school I participated in basketball, track, softball and cheerleading. This being said however I didn't truly feel athletic until I ran my first 10 miler!:) That was back in 2000. Susan

I am not sure about being an athlete. I have never had that question asked. Does playing pool on my pool table count? I really don't know. I know I can out do a lot of people. I always thought of athletes as professionals. I guess you can be in a sport even going through school and be an athlete.

I'm -- like Diane -- not sure at all if I consider myself an athlete. I felt like a serious runner after qualifying for the Boston Marathon for the first time, but still not an athlete. Athletes are the professionals... But I consider myself athletic, strong, healthy etc., But it doesn't really matter, does it.:)
