What type of weights

I pre-ordered STS and am fairly new to lifting. At this time I only have dumbbells, 5's, 8's and 10's. (due to lack of space I am unable have a barbell) I am ready to move to heavier weights and I'm wondering if I should purchase more dumbbells.

I have been looking at the Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells. Does anyone use these? Do you think I should stick with and increase my weights using dumbbells or would the Bowflex be a good move for me? The Bowflex looks awfully wide...

Thanks for any help!

Hello,

I cannot comment on the Bowflex weights because I don't have a pair but you should definitely get more weights. I only had 5's, 8's and then I had 15's all the way up to 25's. I just got 10's and 12's and am contemplating getting plate mates. I think a lot of people are getting scared about the cost that this series might entail but here is the way I think of it. My fiance just renewed his gym membership for a year and a half and even though he got a huge discount it is still going to be over 400 dollars. So even if I do have to invest in some more equipment I will never have to renew anything and I can do it all in the comfort of my own home.
I personally like dumbells best because I like to see all my heavy weights lined up also because it gave me an excuse to ask for a weight rack for christmas!

nkuangel,

I think I will check out the local "Play it again sports" store for used 12's, 15's and 20's. I have also been looking at the plate mates. If you get them, let me know what you think!

Thanks for your help. Have a great day!

Stephanie,

I have used the Bowflex Select Tech Dumbbells and didn't like them. I don't own them but worked out with someone that had them. You are correct they are too wide and felt very bulky. I'd stick with regular dumbbells. As the previous poster suggested, check out "Play It Again Sports" if you have one in the area. I heard that they have great deals.

Jane,

Thanks so much for your input! I'm glad I didn't make the investment on the Bowflex. Off to Play it again! BTW, do they make increments between 15 and 20 pounds? Just curious...

I haven't seen anything between 15 and 20 pounds. You can get platemates. They are little weights that are magnetic and stick to the end of dumbbells. They will allow you to go up a pound or two instead of 5 pounds.

I have the Bowflex Select Tech Dumbells and LOVE them. Sometimes they are a bit wide for certain exercises but for the most part they are way convenient. I know you can pick up cheaper adjustable type sets from Target or Walmart as I have some of those too! Good Luck...:)

I just called Play it again and they have both sets, the Bowflex and the ones they sell at Walmart. I will try them both out and see how they feel. I really like the idea of using the least amount of space...

Thanks!
