What the heck? I've got zits!

I don't know what the heck is going on with my skin lately! I've never been prone to acne - even when I was a teenager. I have very small pores and dry skin, but it seems like I've had these lingering zits in the area between my mouth and my chin for months. And one erupts periodically to become a full-blown zit.

Should I get that Oxy stuff that I used to use when I got them as a teen? Or is there something better for us old ladies?

Hey Donna,

Sometimes I think it the hormones that cause these dreaded things. I know if I changed my diet or my activity, it would cause a breakout. If you have had it for a while, you might want to try proactive. If it is something temporary, you may want to try something less expensive. My daughter tried the proactive and it really seems to work. I hope this helps some

Are you using a new toothpaste by any chance? I recently figured out that I can't use whitening toothpaste as it makes my lip and chin area breakout - I'm not a particularly messy brusher either. Just a thought.

Maybe it's stress related?

If your skin is dry already, then I would avoid using Oxy or Proactiv because they contain benzoyl peroxide, which dries the skin even more. When I use BP products, it makes my skin red, itchy and flaky, and I don't even have dry skin! Probably a better product for you would be something containing salicylic acid. This is usually found in all the clear gel acne treatments. It doesn't dry the skin out like BP. I like Neutrogena's acne products. I use some multi-vitamin acne treatment stuff and it does keep my skin nice and clear. :)

Thanks - I just ordered something called Exposed. It's a face care system: cleanser, clearing tonic, daytime serum, night-time serum and moisturizer. It fights zits, helps with anti-aging and doesn't dry your skin out - or so the reviewers say. The price wasn't bad. About what I pay for cleanser, toner and moisturizer already.

We'll see how it works.

Hi Donna-

Are you sure you don't have an infection? Sometimes Staph infections can look like you describe, and you need to take an antibiotic....

Once in a great while I have a minor breakout. It might be one or two little ones, & every year or two I get those monstrosities I think you can't even call zits. I'm pretty sure they're called "Mount Eruptmore." :p

Anyway, my dermatologist gave me this awesome stuff called Duac, I didn't even need a scrip for it, he just gave me a few sample tubes. You just put a tiny bit on the zit & it's gone in like 48 hours. Even the mountainous ones.

Dry skin can cause zits just as much as oily skin, just the dry skin if it has micro cracks the dirt gets traped runs into the pores and then you can't wash it away. You should use some type of moisturiizing soap, and maybe even a mud mask every once in a while to keep the skin hydrated as well as pull out any dirt and that should help. Also make sure you get that area really good after you workout, sometimes it's easy to miss a spot when your in a hurry and trying to run off to work. Also your makeup could be causing this, if you switched lately or have been trying to cover up the zits. Also make sure you dab that area every now and then threw out the day. This will help keep any sweat or oil that the zits may be pouring out from getting into another pore.

Also it could be your over cleaning that area, your current soap it too tough. I ended up doing that as a teenager, I'd get the toughest stuff like oxy and it would be over clean and would make me break with little zits that were just bumps but then oen would puff up as a real zit and it would be like twice as big as a normal zit, or anyway it seem liked it at the time. I quickly learned to stop using the oxy stuff.

Good luck,

Kit

Well, I'm not very good at washing my face after exercising. I kind of don't bother since I'm home and as soon as I'm finished, I have to make dinner and do a ton of stuff before bed.

I use a very high quality, gentle cleanser (Origins) and exfoliate a few times a week. I'll betcha it's the sweat thing.
