What kind of gloves should I use for the freestanding heavy bag?

There are a couple of things you can do.
If you get those big boxing gloves, you'll need to wear wraps under them.
You can also get some gloves that are kind of like oven mitts, which you use wraps with as well.
If you don't want to use wraps, you can also get some special 'bag gloves' that are more form fitting and have padding over the knuckles and a wrist wrap.
You can see these different types on boxing and martial-arts euipment sites, or visit a local martial arts school or boxing facility. (I got all mine so long ago, I don't remember where they were from).

I like my Harbinger bag gloves the best (open fingers, wrist wrap, protected knuckles, and cushioned palm grip that really helps keep your fist in the right position). I bought the black ones with yellow print in medium, not the style for women. The bigger boxing style gloves I had did not feel right when doing uppercuts, but those were cheap gloves, so I can't really speak too much to that style. I do prefer to wear wraps with the bag gloves.
