Hi Everyone....

I tried P90X for the first time about a week or two ago, but I pulled a muscle in my right boob and it's not healed completely yet. So, this past week, I started running on the treadmill. I do a simple 30 minute program run, and it starts me walking and increases in increments to 6.0 and then back down again to walking.

Anyhoo - now I have a sore spot on my shin. It is an actual lump, and feels like a bruise, but isn't discolored. What do you all think? Shin splints? I don't think I've ever actually had those, so I have nothing to compare to.....

Lori, it doesn't sound like shin splints to me. If it's an actual lump and feels like a bruise, I'd only recommend you stay off of it-- no high impact until 2-3 days after any pain goes away. (Personal experience; I didn't stay off it when it hurt- ran 18 miles on it anyway, then spent the next 4.5 months not running at all with an air cast on my leg for 8 weeks- a stress fracture!)

I've also had a weird thing happen about a year ago to my ankle bone (the one on the inside that protrudes I don't know what you call it)-- it turned red and was sore to the touch. Saw my podiatrist (who I worked for for 10 years) and he x-rayed it; nothing visible. I stayed off of it for three whole days (you can understand how hard that is!) and the fourth day it was as if it never existed and has never bothered me since. Bizarre!

Lesson of my voluminous post? STAY OFF OF IT or risk needing to take a loong time off!

ETA: The yoga workout in P90X is great and might be an option for you.

Did you try icing it too? If it is not improving, you might want to see a doctor. I'm not a big fan of doctor visits, and the following is not advice, but I usually try the RICE method on anything that hurts, then seek a doctor if it does not improve in a week or so.

RICE = Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

I am going to get an xray ....right now! I'll let you know what I find out...hopefully it is nothing. This sitting around just leads to binging.....

Okay, the xrays were "normal" which is a relief, but what do you suppose the lump is then? A strained muscle? :(

It could be a pulled muscle... ouch!! How are your shoes? Are they in good shape? Have you been fitted at a running store to make sure they are the right kind for your foot? Take care!
