What do you think about fasting?

About five years ago, I fasted for one day. I did pretty good. I drink water all day and actually did not get hungry. I want to do this because of all the foods I ate when I was at the beach this past week. I feel I need cleansing. This shouldn't be done often, but this should do me good wouldn't it? I probably would do it on a day I won't exercise.

Also I have heard of people who just eat fruit or broth the whole day. I feel it should be water.

I wanted to get some opinions on it

Truthfully, I'm not particulary fond of drastic measures such as this. I don't think it's good for your body, either. I would think getting back to normal, healthy eating is the perfect "cleansing" your body needs. Anyway, this is how I approach these kinds of situations. Everyone does different things that work for them, but this is not one for me.

Hey Kim!!! It is good to have you back. I hope you had a wonderful time on your vacation. Kim I agree with Debbie. I believe going back to a healthy balanced diet is what you need along with good water intake. I am learning a lot about caloric intake and metabolism thanks to our friend, Sarah ( AKA Ima), and I think it will slow down your metabolism if you fast. I am not an expert and am still learning myself, but this is just MHO.

I dunno. I don't think I would do it for dietary reasons. But if it was part of my religious beliefs, I would do it. It's not though.

Hey ladies,

Yeah I plan on going with my healthy diet, just thought it would be good to do this one day. It sounds like a bad idea. I told my DH that I wanted to do this and He looked at me weird.

I was kind of unsure about this, and that's why I wanted you ladies opinion. So I will probably just start my healthy diet back. Wasn't looking forward to water for one day anyway!!!

Hey jane, it is good to be back. Felt weird not talking to all of you this week.

This one isn't for me either. I just know that if I do this, I'd be so hungry the next day, I'd eat anything I get my hands on. We do go catabolic when we don't eat for this long. Maybe it's just a day, but that's a long time for a body to be hungry. Eventually, the body will find a way to fuel itself, and that's by breaking down muscle first. When I eat a lot of junk (like when pms-ing), I make sure to eat clean after that and decrease my calories by about 300 for the next week or so. I also do more cardio and switch to circuits and cross training workouts. I did this after the holidays -- it took me longer than a week to lose the extra 5 lbs., but it worked. And I didn't have to deprive myself. I admit, I got impatient at one time, but I kept going. I saw more results from the measuring tape than from the scale.

Hey Pinky,

I would love to come home and do aerobics, but of course with this stupid foot I can't. That is why I hate I ate like a pig on vacation. So all I can do is eat clean and weights.

I also now am having problems with the ankle in my other foot. I guess it is because of all the weight I am putting on it due to the other foot. D*mn when will this mess stop?

I feel that this will never improve. Who would think the other foot would start hurting! But I am making a doctors appointment for this week.

Hi Kim,

I'm just finishing up a 3 Day Detox, and am really enjoying the whole process. I'm following the plan from Natural Health magazine's April 2005 issue.

Here's a link: http://www.naturalhealthmag.com/nutrition/11

This is the only detox/fast that I've done, and I will definately do it again in the future. I have eaten much lighter than I usually do, and pretty much eliminated all carbs except for fruit during the 3 days. I'm amazed at how good I feel, and how well my body has responded to this detox. I haven't felt hungry or weak, to my pleasant surprise.

Hope this article helps give you some insight.

Kim, I am very sorry to hear about your injury. If it makes you feel any better, you may be doing just strength training and that may not burn as many calories as cardio. But, according to my HR monitor, I burn about 300-350 calories strength training (with ab work at the end) and 60% of those are fat calories. With cardio I use up almost twice as much calories (about 500-580), but only 30-35% are fat calories. You're still working out. That means you're still burning fat, even your the progress is still slower than if you were BOTH weight training and doing cardio. Good luck with your foot. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Kim,

I'm sorry about your foot, and can completely understand why you kind of slipped when you were at the beach. But fasting isn't the best. Most of the time even for a day it slows down your metabolism. Which means even if you eat clean, you could actually gain another pound or two. Also it is bad for your stomach, and can cause problem later in life, yes that's even if you drink twice the amount of water that your normally do, it can get too much acid, and actually start to burn a hole in the lining, and you won't know about that until you either take a lot of Ibuprofen, or get stressed and the doctor tells you got a hole in your stomach. I get clients/patients on nearly a weekly basis that have fasted and actually did this to themselves some before they see me in their hospital room. A lot of times its from religious reason, other times it's because they want to lose weight. It doesn't happen to everyone but the possibility is always there, especially if you got a lot of stress in your life.

Just start eating clean, and watching your intake, you can’t change what you did, you can make it better, by keeping healthy and eating good. And once you rest both legs, I’m sure they’ll heal and be back to normal.

Please don't fast! that is the beginning of an eating disorder, and they fast all the time, I know I do it all the time and so unhealthy! I am now paying the price for fasting, I now have heart problems

Hey kit,

I saw a podiatrist about a month ago and was supposed to see him the next week but didn't. I thought I could fix my hurt foot without a doctor. He did have me taking 1800 milligrams of ibuprofen a day. I have been doing that for almost three weeks. Although I have cut it down some. Should I stop this? And is this doing anything to my stomach? Maybe I should stop until I make an appointment this week. What do you think?
