What do you do about your hair?

Hi All,
Let me start by saying that I wish not to offend or exclude anyone. That being said, I'm an black woman with the usual hair problems that black women face who are active; what to do with your hair! During the week I always slick it back into a ponytail because once I start sweating that's it for a cute hair style. I wanted to know what other active black women do regarding keeping their hair looking nice.

Snip, snip baby!

Drastic, I know, but that's what I decided to bite the bullet (grab the scissors ;-)) and do some years back. I LOVE it now, it's similar to Eva Pigford's. Just this aft I was in and out of my barber-friend's chair in minutes rather than spending way too much time and $$ at the hair salon. Back in the day Saturday's at the hair dresser's was such agnony! Even with an appt the waiting would have me cursing under my breath! Back when folks used to ask me why I did it I'd say, well, I didn't cut my head off just my hair:). I can regrow it whenever I decide to but for now it works for me and for my workouts!!

Well,

This is a huge issue and thanks for bringing it up. I have gone to braids and tracks to allow me to wash more and still have my hair look decent. Not for everyone but works for me. I also went with a curly style (like a dry curl..I know..I know) so that I wouldn't have the "edges" issues.

When I have hair out I usually do a wrap style and work out with a scarf around it. Also, I use dry spray shampoo when I can find it.

Hope this helps.

I have the same problem. I have long relaxed hair and I sweat so bad during my workouts that you would think I washed my hair it gets so wet.

This might be a little too time consuming or sound a little weird to you but what I do is this...

I put my hair in two ponytails, and roll the ends up in a roller and then tie my hair tight with a scarf....what ends up happening is that the scarf basically soaks up a lot of the sweat, and then when I'm done I use a blow dryer on a cool setting to dry my roots (NOT ENDS-leads to too much DAMAGE), because the ends were in the rollers my hair isn't that bad and then finally I wrap my hair as the last step to straigten it out as I get dressed. The headgear looks a little crazy but I'm working out at home so who cares.....I can't wash my hair everyday (because its relaxed) so I wash, deep condition, and roller set faithfully every weekend to maintain health....

I know it sounds a little time consuming but it takes me two seconds to ponytail it up and then about 15 minutes to dry the roots and wrap my hair after the workout. Granted I'm not saying it looks like I stepped out of the salon but it's decent enough for me to go work and not always have a ponytail or bun....

Hope this helps

Not a black woman here, but this hair thing is also a problem for me. I have very thick hair--it doesn't get longer, it gets bigger! It takes FOREVER to dry it, and when I workout, I am soaked. Also, after an upper body workout, my arms are too tired to hold up for that long! I workout first thing in the morning, sometimes getting up as early as 4 a.m.,and after a 60-90 minute workout, I refuse to spend time doing my hair. I keep it cut very short, shorter than my husband's. I love it, and I get lots of compliments about my hair.

Just my $.02 :)

Thanks Ladies,
Well right now I have a weave:eek: . It's my first time with one and I debated about it forever. It looks good but I really don't like the fact that I can't get to my scalp when I wash it, especially since I sweat so much during my workouts. I was considering braids which I've worn in the past but I am in the process of looking for a new job and am not sure if braids look too ethnic-though I do live in L.A. I like the idea of getting it cut short but am bit afraid that it won't work for me:(

I'm not a black woman, and I don't have thick hair - so this isn't an issue for me at all. However...I'm nosey and can't help but chime in. One of the ladies who sits with me wears hair pieces all the time. I hired her and then worked with her for months before finding out her hair wasn't real. She just got her real hair cut into an adorable short style that everyone loved - except her. Today she's got the long hair back.

She looks beautiful either way. I think it's a nice option that she can change her look so easily and have it look so natural. I keep trying to talk her into braids - I think those look excellent. Who cares if they look "too ethnic" - they're cool. The woman who worked with me at my last job always looked her most beautiful when she had the braids.
