Weight Watchers to speed up a slow metabolism?

Hi, I'm 49, 5'2" and about 123 lbs. I feel like my body is probably in starvation mode as I can't seem to lose even a pound unless I keep my calories under 1200. Even at that few calories, I still have plenty of energy for my Cathe workouts and cycling. Saw a friend a couple weeks ago and she's lost mucho weight on Weight Watchers. Has to now GAIN weight as it was so effective for her. I know she's probably lost muscle too, but still...She's been using the Flex plan and loves it. She only does workouts a few times a week at Curves. She used to bicycle avidly with me, long endurance rides of 70-100 miles, lots of hill work, etc. and was conscious of not eating a lot of junk, but she never lost much if any weight doing that kind of stuff.

Anyone else have success with Weight Watchers after being stuck at a plateau for so long and being within that 5-10# range so close to your goal? I'm tempted to try it. I'd love to lose 5#. Right now, I have to fight so hard for just 1#.

Hoping to hear your opinions and experiences.

Hi Jeanette,

Well,i had to lose more than five pds but I figured I would reply anyway!

I LOVE WW'ers and started the program back in janurary of last year! by the time spring came I was down about 32pds,doing my regualar cathe workouts(5/6 days a week)

Before I started WWers I was in a very long plateau that had last for the most part of 96 and WW broke it for me!

I don't follow WWers anymore(my body adapted to it x( and quit dropping weight after being on the program about 4mths)

anyway I HTH's and maybe others will reply!
Have a good day!

ETA-I lost 3.5pds this week on the South beach diet if your interested in that! :)

There is a new article posted yesterday in the Q & A at Sparkpeople.com. (Not sure how to find it since I got an email about it and just clicked "here").

It was about plateaus. May help a bit without actually using an organized program.

Good luck.

Amelia,
Thanks for the response. So glad you were able to break the plateau. Was Weight Watchers more or less calories than you previously ate? Do you know why your body adapted to Weight Watchers after a while? Is that common for people to experience? Why do you think South Beach is working now? What is the premise behind South Beach?

Jacque, I tried to go to Spark People but was unsuccessful in reading the article.

Jeanette,

People don't tend to have their bodies adjust to the WW program. Usually they are at a plateau, either mentally or physically. If it is mental we just need to clean up our eating and be more diligent with the portions. If it is physical we can do some things to shake it up but it just takes a little time to work through.

I lost 50 pounds 9 1/2 years ago with WW and have kept it off. :7

In order to lose weight we MUST reduce the calorie in/calorie out ratio. People find on Weight watchers they actually eat more yet consume fewer calories due to healthier, "Low Energy Density" food choices.

"Low Energy Density" soimply means that the food has fewer calories per pound.

Good luck with whatever you choose! :)

Hey Jeanette,

I will do my best to answer:7

<Was Weight Watchers more or less calories than you previously ate?>

I just dragged out my journals from last year and it looks like I ate a little bit less with WWers(but there really wasn't a huge differnce),of course it would also depend on the food i was eating. When I switched to calories,I tried to eat as clean as possible, but still with no 'scale' results but (also pulled out my measurments chart) but once I started eating cleaner and maintained my workout routine I started dropping inches

<Do you know why your body adapted to Weight Watchers after a while?>

Well, after driving myself nuts(not mention family members and my poor DH)I just came to the conclusion that My body just adapts easliy. I did have alot more skin after losing all that weigth so maybe my body was just 'fitting into its new moude' per sa!

<Is that common for people to experience?>

I would say so! Do a google search for 'weightloss plateau' there very common! As a matter of fact im in one right now, lol! Im hoping the SBD will help with that,so far so good! I just have to change things up a bit. I love circuits for that too!

<Why do you think South Beach is working now?>

well for one thing there is NO bread,No fruit or baked goods the first phase(last two weeks)so losing 8-10pds in the first phase is normal! so I just thought THAT in its self would help break this plateau im in! I will see what happens in phase two, when I start adding in those whole grains and fruits!

<What is the premise behind South Beach?>

The south beach diet teaches you to rely on the right carbs and the right fats-the good ones! Which was what I needed... Here is a site that I found helpful when I was curious about it! http://weightloss.about.com/cs/diets/a/aa060403a.htm

HTHs:D

I have been a lifetime member of weight watchers for almost 2 years and have fell off the wagon a bit. I do think that weight watchers will help you to take off the pounds. Now I am concentrating on clean eating as well, I want to look like I work out.

<I want to look like I work out>>>

Trish K,I know exactly what you mean! In my case,I have muscle-its just hiding under a layer of fat! :+
