Weight Loss Checkin

Steppingup

Cathlete
I am very unworthy to start this checkin but I'm doing it anyway. I have started gaining weight but have still done well with my eating. Does anyone know if Celebrex encourages weight gain. I have been taking it for my low back pain. Anyway, exercise and diet have been good but I will tighten down just a little more on the eating part. I usually allow myself a little splurging on the weekend but I will stop that for now and see if that makes a difference. My workouts have been fairly long and intense so I don't think I can improve on that. Any suggestions are very welcome.

Well, how is everyone else doing. I would love to hear that someone else is losing weight!!!!!

Hi Everyone,

No good news here to report. I was on vacation for 5 days and gained 1.5 pounds. Oh well--it was fun in the process. In the grand scheme of things, I am still down 11.5 pounds from when I started my exercise quest in January, 2001!

Gotta get back on track again! How about everyone else?

Hi Checkin'ers!
Kelly, I am sorry about your weight gain. You are always so supportive on this thread like the head cheerleader to all of us, and I wish you were having success yourself. It must be especially aggravating when you know you are doing WELL with the eating and exercise, so you deserve to be losing--NOT gaining! Did your splurges usually involve both weekend days? Maybe you could cut back to just one of the weekend days, instead of cutting it out altogether...I know if I had to completely NOT splurge at ALL, I'd probably get very resentful and rebellious and fall off the wagon completely. This is just the way my mind works, it may be nothing like this for you...but I just thought I'd mention it. Don't want you feeling too deprived cuz that can certainly backfire on ya. I'm afraid I don't know a thing about Celebrex but hopefully someone will be able to offer some advice.

Just curious, how much weight have you already lost? and do you have a long way to go? How many calories to you typically eat in a day?

I am actually enjoying a very motivated phase....feeling empowered and like "I can do this". I had gotten below 140 but just b-a-r-e-l-y below...more like hovering right around 139-140.......but for the past couple of mornings I have been "firmly" below 140 by 2-3 pounds. So now I know I have broken that plateau (again).

Keep up the good work and I'm sure you'll see progress!!! What rotation are you doing? Don't I ask too many questions!? :)

Deb

Cruncholi, I bet you did have fun gaining that 1.5 pounds. I wish I could eat anything and everything and not gain weight but this bod does not work that way. I'm glad you had a good time!

Deb, I usually splurge one meal on Saturday and one on Sunday. For now I think I will see how not doing either goes but if I feel deprived I can always go to one meal for the weekend. When I started trying to lose weight (January of 2000) I weighed 205 pounds. I'm 5'9" by the way. I had lost down to 163 but the last time I weighed I was back up to 174 and my clothes are starting to feel snug. Eeeek! I can't stand for my clothes to feel tight. My goal is to get to 160 and maybe even 155 which is what I weighed when I got married about 6 years ago. Right now I am doing Cathe's slow and heavy on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and on Monday, Wednesday and Friday I do step aerobics and hi/lo and I have just started a running program. I am aiming at running two days a week. I also want to add in some Pilates because my core strength is just about nonexistant. As far as calories, I'm not sure right now because I have not been keeping track but when I was losing so much last year I was eating around 1200 to 1500 calories a day. I tried that again this year but it didn't seem enough. I was tired all the time but that may be because my thyroid is out of kilter. I will have that rechecked in September and may have to go on medication. I am tired of being tired. :) Well, that was probably way more than you wanted to know but thanks for asking anyway! How tall are you? It feels good to break a plateau, huh? Here's to continued success!!!!!!

Kelly

A few suggestions: Keep track of what you eat for about 3 weeks, and that means write EVERYTHING down. Have a good calorie book handy, like the one I have by Calorie King. After you have determined that your diet cannot be the cause, ask your doc to switch medications, and if he/she won't, go to another doc and get a second opinion! I just went through that, got off the offending drug and lost the weight I knew was attributed to it. Take charge & make them listen to you!

I also agree about keeping your pig out days to just one on the weekend. Good luck!

Good morning ladies...congratulations on all of your success and breakthroughs! I feel like I am just starting here since I am not yet totally consistent with everything yet...in the middle of moving and feeling a little out of sync. But I am trying to do something everyday...weights or aerobics...and will hopefully be moved in in about two weeks so can get refocused. I am 5'10" and would like to get my weight down to about 155. That is almost 80 pounds for me to lose...I have been there and back several times over the past thirty years and really want to find a lifestyle that accomodates a healthy weight...not this on and off again thing...Anyway...as some of you may know who are nearer to my age...at 50 our hormones and bodies play these nasty little tricks and what used to be so easy...like losing weight...is a real struggle...But, I do keep a food diary religiously now...try to eat a healthy diet but do NOT go on these drastic calorie reduction plans anymore...they just majorly mess up your metabolism...and have lost and kept 10 pounds off now for about three months. Consistency is the key and I expect to do this slowly. So, I will be checking in more regularly with you all for all of your encouragement and KNOW that I appreciate it.

Kathleen

Honeybunch, thanks for your advice. I am going to start today keeping a record of what I eat. It is tedious but it did work well before.

Kathleen, you're tall like me. Even though I'm only 32 losing weight has been incredibly difficult. My metabolism has always been slow as a slug. I know it seems like a long road ahead for you but if you will just take it one pound at a time it won't seem like so much. You sound very upbeat and ready to get down to business. I will be interested to see how you do. Maybe you can give me some helpful hints along the way!!!!!

Kelly

Just wanted to wish Cruncholi and Kathleen a successful week. Cruncholi, I would say that 1.5 pounds isn't really much to gain for a week's vacation!!!! You're doing great since the start of the year. And Kathleen, slow and steady is the WAY!!! Keep it up, girl!

Kelly, I am only 5'2" and am 39 (and a half) years old. You are young and tall, 2 things I would love to be....LOL!!! I would love to get down to 125 or even 120...I'm not sure how low I can feasibly reach at this point in my life. I haven't even tried the S&H's yet, I am enjoying my current rotation too much (and shhh, don't tell anyone but I think I'm scared to try the S&H's!!!):)

Well, I've gotta go and do my workout...time for Rhythmic Step!;-)

Hello everyone!
First, I want to thank everyone for the advice on starting a running program. I checked out the info at the Runner's World site and it was very helpful and interesting. Again, Thanks!

I, too, am in the gainer's category for the past week. I gained about a pound, but also got my period so I am not too concerned.

Have to agree with Deb. Go slow and steady and it will happen. Have a great week y'all.

Week in Review: I ate more healthfully (for the most part), drank more water, noticed increased cardio capacity and lost 2 more pounds....that's 3 and counting. But don't congratulate me yet, I've yo-yo'd btwn 210-205-210-205 for A YEAR! Enough!!!

I KNOW I can FINALLY break the 200 lb barrier IF I focus over the next 2 weeks. Then press on to my first goal of 145 lbs (I'm 5'5"). I'm also going on a cruise in 27 days and even though I won't be near goal, I would like to see a noticeable difference in my appearance.

Hi Crystal,
I just wanted to say "have fun on your cruise." I've never been on one, but my parents just got back and they told me how there were several types of exercise to do on the ship: swimming, aerobics, walking, and "something where they used heavy bars" (my guess is bodybar??). Anyway, it looks like you can continue your exercise program while you are vacationing! Have a great time!

Hi guys, just thought I'd jump in here because I'm really excited about an article I just read. I don't have to lose weight, so much as I need to firm up my super-jiggly butt. I just read in August's Self Magazine about a study done by Carol Binzen at Johns Hopkins about women and weightlifting. Binzen discovered that lifting weights has much better fat-burning effects than previously thought - and this is the real revelation to me - even better than cardio. Cardio burns about equal amounts of carbs and fat. Strength-training burns mostly fat, and the metabolic effects last three times as long! After reading this, I have decided to really rededicate myself to strength-training. I typically choose cardio over weights because I've just always thought it burned more calories. This study seems to indicate the opposite. (By the way, I did a google-search for "Binzen" and got more info. on the Internet.)

Food for thought!!

I think 200 is a good short-term goal Crystal...small increments work better for me than looking at say 70 pounds to lose...I am happy with one pound if I keep it off...The cruise will be wonderful...I have never been but am interested in seeing how you like it...maybe it should be a goal for me...my daughter mentioned one the other day.

Hi Caroline...I just have to laugh everytime I see your name...Humanhair...

It seems like we get stuck with this idea that aerobic is best...and even I fall back into thinking well maybe I should be running more than lifting....but from experience weightlifting is really the way to go. I notice such a difference even in the way I feel during the day when I lift in the morning versus jog...it is like I have this little engine running inside of me for hours...We have been in the "dark ages' for so long...especially where lifting and women are concerned...I still get raised eyebrows at work when I bring in my magazines with muscled women in them...that is why we surround ourselves with supportive groups if at all possible.

And good luck with the jiggles.

Kathleen

Cruisin'

This is actually my 6th cruise. A friend dragged me on a 3-day
once and I've been HOOKED ever since and take one every year. I think a cruise is THE ultimate vacation and I have the time of my life every time.

Carnival is my favorite line so far, my husband and I love seeing new places especially exotic beaches, partying, the vegas style shows and getting dressed up for formal night but there is something for everyone: aerobics, relaxation, reading, spa treatments, jazz, classical,& disco...even swing, shopping, art shows, etc. and that's just onboard the Ship!!!!! Can you tell I'm a cruise advocate?
