Weaning to cow's milk - when?

Hi everyone,

My DD is going to turn 1 year in 13 days. She currently nurses 4 times a day. It's always been my intention to begin weaning her to cow's milk when she turned one. Due to scheduling conflicts that have recently arisen, I would like begin that weaning process a bit early. Specifically, I would like to swap her 3rd feeding (late afternoon) with a sippy-cup of whole cow's milk.

I'm hesitant to do so, because of all the talk about having to wait until the baby is one year old before introducing cow's milk. But 13 days surely won't "matter" - will it? She's a robust, healthy girl with a hearty appetite. We have no food allergies in our families, and she's been getting small amounts of dairy in her food for a while now (yogurt, cheese).

What's your opinion? Switch one feeding for a cup of whole cow's milk (or perhaps soymilk?)? Or wait until her actual birthday?

Thanks!
Sandra

Sandra- my pediatrician has let me introduce cows milk at 10 mos. with all three of my kids. I've always nursed until 10 mos, then gradually switched over. So my answer is go for it. You could do soymilk if you wanted.

I would first try pumping some milk to aid in the adjustment then gradually add cow's milk. 13 days til the 1 year mark, shouldn't make a difference, your child is practically 1.

What's 13 days? Go for it!
