Walking Lunges...where do you perform these...

Hi girls - the January rotation calls for some walking lunges - just a mere 400...just wondering if everyone performs the walking lunges around their house, outside, around a room...sorry if this is a dumb question ...

I am trying to figure out where to do these...it is cold weather outside and with two lab puppies at my heels the outdoors is not very conducive for these...

I used to do these at Golds but I am trying to work out at home now...
even a trip around the free weight floor at the gym was only 75 lunges...and that was a pretty big room.

Maybe down hallways, around rooms..For some reason I just have to know what part of the house everyone does these in!

I guess one trip around the house could be walking, bending over and picking up the kids toys and laundry lunges...I wonder if you can do these with a vaccuum in hand?!

I know that lunges (as much as I hate them) are really effective...so I want to try to (gulp) complete 400 lunges as the January rotation states - but I know it will take some time to build up to that...my legs were jelly after 3 trips around the gym...

thanks!

Judy

Judy, I do them inside, and as you said, down the halls, around the rooms, back up the hall, through the dining room and kitchen, back and forth. I've been lucky and DH, who works out of town during the week, has only seen me do these one time. He just looked at me, he didn't ask! LOL:p

I can go from the far end of my family room through the kitchen to the door that goes to my garage for a total of 20 lunges. I often do them while I'm watching the news or something like that.

ETA oops--I lied. I only get 14 lunges in that space going one way.

Michele:)

When I did them for the August rotation, I did them outside, very early in the morning, with my golden romping around me thinking I was nuts! My neighbor caught me one morning! Now, I just go back and forth in my family room and up and down the hall way. Not as fun as outside, but with icky weather, you do what you can do.

Try going 4 lunges forward, then 4 lunges back (instead of turning around). Change legs each round to alternate starting legs.

Just a suggestion that can help you keep from getting dizzy in a smaller turn-around space!

And if you do them while vaccuuming, be sure to change the side the vaccuum is on every once in a while. ;-) (Lunges would be good for vaccuuming under the furniture!)

I do mine in sets of 50 and I do them either outside or inside the house. It is a bit tricky inside my house as I don't have any long hallways and I have to make lots of turns.

I guess I should have asked if anyone uses dumbbells with their lunges...I know I wont be able to for 400! I will give it a shot though...

Thanks for all your responses...I guess I will have to make the loop around the house several times also...

I've done them both with and without dumbells, but mostly without. I find that they're enough of a workout all on their own.

I used to have a personal trainer who had me do them while wearing a weighted vest;-)

ETA I love your Avatar! What adorable puppies:+

I am also with Michele....beautiful puppies!! I am such a softy for puppies...:+ :) ..as for the lunges I do them like Charlotte in sets of 50. I try for 200 4 times a week mostly without weight...:)...Carole

Oh the puppies are soooo cute!!

I don't use weight Judy, I'm a wimp when it comes to these. I've can do 200 without stopping. I know there'll be a rest when doing those 400!!

I do them around the house. My main floor is kind of open plan, so I start in the family room, through the dining room, living room around through the kitchen. I think I get about 30 or so in doing that loop. I don't do them with weights. I also don't take a break. A caution though. When you're doing them in the house and you have to turn corners, make sure your foot is placed properly so you don't torque your knee:)

LOL........I can see us all now .......walking around our houses lunging. I also walk from my living room thru the dining rooma and into the kitchen and then turn around and go from the kitchen ...thru the dining room, down the hall and into the family room and back.

Hi Judy.

I do not go through the entire house. It's not easy to TURN doing walking lunges. LOL I simply pickeded the longest straight path in my home where I can do the most lunges w/o turning corners or turning around or anything. After a few trials I have taken a straight path from my kitchen sink through my kitchen, into my living room. When I hit the end, I turn around and do it again. The less turns you have to make, the better....atleast I find this to be true.

My mom has a GREAT house for this activity...the way it is set up she has a pretty long stretch of space to utilize for this. Unfortunately I no longer live there. ;)

ETA: If I had a private yard that allowed me more lunges before turning I would probably go outside (weather permitting) but I do not. :-(

1st off your puppies are adorable!!:) My yellow lab "puppy" - Ruby- is almost 2 and oh I miss the time when I could pick her up! Now she's 80+ pounds and thinks she's a lap dog!!
Now, I do my lunges in the basement back and forth. I have never done 400 of them! Yikes!! But one end to the other is about 100 for me. I too will attempt this amazing feat of 400. When my hubby looked over this rotation he was amazed at how hard it looked. Me too! Susan

I am doing 400 today. I like to do mine with weights (15# db's) in each hand cuz you feel the burn in your butt the next day alittle more. I read in one of the Oxygen Mags that you should use 25# db's in each hand, but I don't remember how many lunges they said to do. Anyhow, these lunges really helps to lift your butt and I ain't done sculpting my backside yet. I still have alittle ways to go, but I am in a hurry too to get there like most of us so I want to use weights!

Sounds like Monty Python's "Ministry of Funny Walks"!

Thanks everyone!

Well I guess I better start finding the longest path in my house...I agree with the less turns the better...

Those cute little lab puppies...they were a Christmas present last year for my family...they are littermates..Misty and Jake..Jake is now 95 pounds (we call him "horse") and Misty is a little jumping bean at 45 pounds...3 days after we picked them up last year they both got Parvo and Misty almost died...we are soooo glad she made it...

Now as far as both these cute puppies and their chewing habits...

check out what they did to my weight bench...

and this is an old picture...the weight bench is now completely plywood...That is Jake - doesn't he look innocent?

we are moving the gym into the garage until they get past their chewing stage!

omg was that 400 lunges with 15 lbs in each hand??? ! You are an animal Toasty!

Speaking of these I've been doing these for a while but I'm never sure if I'm doing them right. I usually go slow and get down pretty low, but then I feel it a little much in my front knee. How fast do you do these? More of a walking speed? Sometimes I lift my back leg early and put most of the weight on my front leg for the lift. Do you go down to a 90 degree angle in each leg? or is the back leg more straight? Obviously I'm not too sure on the form for these.

WOW! That's something Ruby never did! She will only chew on rawhide, never any furniture or shoes etc... But Jake has that adorable face and those big dark eyes - how can ya stay mad?? :) Susan
