Vegetarian/Vegan and DH's Who Aren't

What is it her business what you eat? Food, politics, and religion are things that shouldn't be discussed at work. ;-)

Beavs - she's also a friend outside of work. Otherwise I would agree with you. Although we have such a small office that it's hard to keep anything a secret! Especially when it comes to food b/c these women like to eat. But so far they have always been very respectful of my healthy eating and hopefully they will continue to be respectful.

I just ordered Mad Cowboy from Amazon and can't wait to read it! Another good read...a riveting read is The China Study. My daughter brought home a funny little book called Skinny Bitch ( sorry if I've offended anyone) this is really the title! Anyway, I read it and it is written by a former model agency rep and a holistic nutritionist. This book is all about how to maintain health and lose weight through a vegan diet. The book has allot of language in it, but once you get past that it was an entertaining and informative read! deb

>ok so I am finally going to ask...
> What is tempeh?

Sarah,
Tempeh (prounounced "TEM-pay" ) is an indonesian food made from soybeans (sometimes mixed with grains) treated with a specific culture that grows and binds them together into a cake. It tastes somewhat reminiscent of fish or chicken (depending on how it is prepared), is an more-easily-digestible form of soy, and makes a great mock "chicken-or-the-egg" salad.

>What do you say to the naysayers about being a vegetarian or
>*gasp* a vegan?

Educate yourself and develop a support system.
Pick up "Becoming Vegan" for a good overview
Pick up "Vegan Freak" for a guide to how to deal with non-vegans (it brings up a lot of situations we vegans find ourselves in, and gives tactics for dealing with them. The authors also have a website, but I don't have the URL off-hand)
Read John Robbins' "The Diet Revolution"
T.C. Campbell's "The China Study"
Dr. Fuhrman's "Eat to Live"
pick up the "Eating" DVD from www.ravediet.com

>I was talking with a friend/co-worker and her
>immediate response was "Don't become a vegetarian. People need
>to eat meat. It's not healthy. I crave meat.

Is her argument that because she craves meat, "people need it"? Really scientific.

Just because someone "craves" something, doesn't mean they need it.
People crave drugs (and certain substances in meat--like hormones--and cheese---a natural-occurring caseinomorphin--can be addictive).

> She said it
>wouldn't make a difference with migraines or stomach issues
>and she just couldn't live without meat.

How does she know it won't make a difference? Can she predict the future?

Again, she is not literaly saying "I would die without the nutrients in meat," but rather "I'm hooked on meat."

Suz,
Perhaps let her know that you don't intend to convert her and there is no need to "convert" you. Let her know it won't be necessary for either of you to pass judgement. I suppose easier said than done so I wish you luck, on both getting along with your friend and following through on your decision.

Barb - I think I'm gonna go order that cookbook. It's the perfect time of year, especially since we are supposed to get SNOW Friday night! Thanks!

Beavs - she has come to her senses and finally told me that her biggest concern was where we were going to eat on "cheat day" (DH and I always invite her too when she's in town). I told her we would figure it out and there are lots of places I can still eat. :)

Kathryn - I just knew you would have numerous resrouces for me. Thanks!!! I only wish I were at home so I could start looking at them right now.

Thanks again to all of you for your help. I'm excited!

Suz,
Glad to know you will be able to resolve this. She may even enjoy some of your foods. I am not a vegan and don't plan to become one although I have a vegan friend who has bedazzled me on more than one occasion with a yummy dish. The only rule is that I can't eat ice cream in her presence. Apparently she misses the Ben & Jerry.....
Best of luck and happy cooking!

Suz,

I can't wait to get Mad Cowboy in the mail....just W-a-i-t-i-n-ggggg. I did however order the Rave diet book + DVD. Thank you Kathryn for the references you gave! I have read all of Dr. Ruth Heidrich's books. I think her story is inspiring.

Suz, I wish you luck with your venture back to veganism. I can't believe I have taken the plunge and how simple and tasty it has been. There are so many reasons to consider eating a whole foods diet and I believe everyone must find their own way there. I love the information and inspiration I receive here. What a joy.
