Vacationing in and around SFO

My husband and I are planning a trip to SFO. We'll be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary.

We will most likely be flying into SFO, then renting a car. A few people have recommended that we fly into Oakland instead. Any recommendations on this would be great.

We'd like to drive north towards the Redwood National Forest, and then drive south to Carmel. If you live there, or have been there, please give me some recommendations as to what to see (Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, etc). What's the weather like in July? Thanks - I've been searching the internet, but would love some ideas!

Linda-

Happy Anniversary!

I live in the Bay Area and my DH works at the Westin SFO. Feel free to PM me with any questions!

I don't think you'll need to fly into Oakland or San Jose, since it seems you're coming from probably Atlanta. Check the rates, though, as the 2 alternative airports can have cheaper rates (Oakland would be your best bet for that). Oakland to San Francisco, depending on time of day, can take 30-70 minutes. San Jose depending on time of day is probably about the same. The actual scenery from the planes won't matter- you aren't going to get an arial view of the Golden Gate or anything, LOL! ;)

In San Francisco itself in July, the weather will be maybe 60 degrees and overcast-- it's terrible! :) As soon as you leave the city, though, temps can reach the 90s in the late afternoons.

You might enjoy heading to Muir Woods, too. And let me know if you want some anniversary dinner recommendations, and if there are any types of places you enjoy, like hikes, shopping, etc. Alcatraz is a "do it once" kind of thing in my book, but Angel Island is nice and has some hikes and you can bring a picnic and spend the day that way.

There is TONS to do!!! Have fun!!!

Do you like wine? Heading north to Napa to a winery or two might be nice. Monterrey Bay (south toward Carmel) is nice too. There is a neat aquarium there and Cannery row has different shops. Lombard street in SF is neat to see. I just pulled up a link to make sure I spelled it right and the site lists all kinds of things to do, Fisherman's warf, Muir woods, Romantic Getaways etc. Here's the link. Have Fun.
