Upper back pain

Well, I hurt my back after a recent work out and have been in severe pain since last Tuesday. Been to the chiropractor and nothing helped there so went to my regular doctor. He put me on pain killers and anti-inflamatory meds and told me not to exercise except I can walk on the treadmill. My question. Will I be able to get a decent workout on the treadmill? I can't jog or run until I am pain free for at least 3 days and then and only then can I start back up with light weights. I am so frustrated because I finally got a routine that I could maintain and now I am going to have to start all over. Thanks for you help.

Sorry to hear about your injury. This happens to me every now and then too (although lower back, not upper). The advice I have always received is not to use the treadmill (or in my case stairmaster) as a workout but only as physical therapy, meaning gentle movement. If you are in pain, that means your body needs to heal, and that should happen before you try to work it hard. Otherwise, you risk further injury, both in terms of severity and duration. So despite your routine, my advice is to take it super-easy until you have your pain-free days, and then get back into it.

Good luck!

Just Starting,

I too just hurt myself exercising. I think I pulled a muscle. Anyway, I'll be in the tub for a few days with ebsom salts (as someone on the board suggested) getting a well deserverd soak. When I get out I should be shrivilled, but in better shape.:+

Life sometimes throws you these curve balls. Heal first before you play. If you don't, it could be worse for you. Read books, watch TV, catch up on your magazines, all the things you never have time for. Have someone cook you dinner for a few days.

Worry about your exercises later. They will still be there. Besides, you gathered quite a bit of muscle memory, you'll be in tip top shape in no time at all.

Take and soak,

Janie

It's funny how doctors differ. When I went to an orthopedic surgeon because of lower back pain (a highly recommended one) he diagnosed me with a herniated disc. When I asked him what I should do for activity he asked me what I did for exercise. I told him, yoga, step and heavy weights. He told me to continue with my usual routine. So I did, and the back pain went away after a week. The exercise didn't make it any worse, in fact, on days when I sat around and did nothing my back would stiffen up and I'd feel a lot of pain.

Of course, listen to your doctor. Everyone is different, but I just thought I'd share my little story. Hope you feel better soon!

Lesliew,

I know of an 85 year old woman that snowshoes with me in the Winter. She says the same thing as you. If she dosen't keep herself busy physicaly, she hurts, she's much able to move better, with less stiffness when she is physically active.
