Ugh! Do I have thrush? (maybe TMI)

Help! Bfing is painful! I have tiny little blisters on my nipples and they burn. I have no idea if this is thrush or the result of DD's recent bout of fussiness, which involved a lot of grunting and pulling on the breast. She went to the dr today for something else and I asked him to look for signs of thrush in her mouth and he said there were none. I have pumped today instead of nursing to give my poor breasts a break from the little beast. I am hoping that's all they need to heal. Ugh! I have guests coming tomorrow and I don't want to deal with a trip to the dr.!

Anyone experience anything like this? I normally love bfing but this is ridiculous.

I would call your ob or local breast feeding center for more info. It could be the result of a difficult breast feeding session. Have you tried lanolin on your breast? It really helps to relieve irritation.

Monica, that sounds awful! I don't know if that's thrush, but something obviously needs to be done. Is there a breastfeeding consultant that you can go to? www.kellymom.com is also a superb site for anything you need to know about breastfeeding.

Good luck!

Hi Monica,

I've been breastfeeding my son for eleven weeks. I've had similar symptoms for the past day or so. I just searched on kellymom.com using the words "nipple blister", and found this article:

http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/nipplebleb.html

To sum up: If there's just one irritated spot, it's probably a milk blister. If you have more than one blister-looking spot, it's probably thrush. Whatever it is, I hope yours goes away very soon!

Thanks, everyone, for the info and expressions of sympathy! It has gotten much better over the weekend, which makes me think it was an injury rather than thrush. I think she may be going through a growth spurt (at least I hope so, she is only 12.5 pounds at 3.5 months) and that makes her fuss more while eating, which sometimes ends up hurting me. x( Oh well, I shouldn't complain, it's still easier than mixing formula and making bottles. I'm way too lazy for that. ;-)
