Turkey day strategy, anyone?

Cathlete
I normally allow one cheat day per week, Friday sundown to Saturday sundown, but for Turkey day week I still do one cheat day, but split it up. I would get the shakes if I had to wait from Thursday till the following Friday night to get my next cheat day, so I'll eat like a piggy in the afternoon of Thursday after eating normally earlier. Then I'll wait until Saturday morning and have a much modified cheat day. I could never handle two full cheat days in one week, but that's just me.

Anyone else care to share plans?

Moderation???!!!!

I'm just going to eat what I want and enjoy the day. Everything in moderation! :D

I don't practice that on Turkey day - I have some of my dad's famous hash brown casserole, then I do not pass Go, and head straight for the dessert table - no turkey for me! I'm a family elder now, so no one can stop me! I also suggested a rule that has become a tradition - the oldest person in the group goes first through the line, so I'm maybe 4th or 5th.

Hash brown casserole! <drools>

And don't get me wrong, when I say "everything in moderation" I mean everything: a slice of pumpkin pie, a slice of blueberry pie, a wedge of Indian Pudding, please pass the whipped cream! Oh, is that vanilla ice cream over there? :D

A holiday devoted to eating. It's like god knew my dreams... :D

Did you ever see the movie, Defending your Life? Heaven was filled with food and you could eat it without ever gaining a pound. I think that is what heaven is like:D

Sparrow, what is Indian pudding?

Michele, it's a traditional New England food, sort of an upgraded hasty pudding. Here's what Wiki says:

Indian pudding
Indian pudding is a more elaborate form of corn hasty pudding. It consists of milk, corn, and molasses, (or, alternatively, maple syrup and honey, and sometimes sugar), spices (nearly always including cinnamon and ground ginger), butter, and usually raisins and nuts, baked in a slow oven for several hours. It is a traditional New England dessert, traditionally served with chocolate syrup, or now with hot sauce ice cream.

I don't put raisins or nuts in mine though, and I serve it with ice cream and whipped cream. It's really good, though people tend to either be for or against it, taste-wise. :D

Oh god, I'm drooling all over my keyboard  . That sounds delish!!

I guess I don't look at food as something to strategize against. I'll just eat in moderation and enjoy.

We're going out to a restaurant for our Thanksgiving Day meal. I'll eat what I'm served there, and then I'll come home. There will be no leftovers or any temptations around our house for me to even think of picking on. :)

I really like it! Want the recipe? I'll post later if you do...right now I am in the middle of the dreaded cleaning. God I hate cleaning.
Thank you, I'd LOVE the recipe!! Take your time -- I'm in the middle of the dreaded cleaning, too -- UGH!

My contribution to the dinner...

Oh god, I'm drooling all over my keyboard  . That sounds delish!!

...will be dessert! Since I will be the most active participant at the dessert table, I must contribute to it: an Impossible Sweet Potato pie. I've never tried to make one, but I've made an Impossible Pecan pie before, so I'm hoping it's going to be just as good.

I have no strategy, I'm going to enjoy my family and the meals, deserts and treats they worked so hard on. It's very polite to do this and make them know that they made wonderful dishes. So I'll have a piece of everything. If they brought in chocolate,or candy, cookies (how sweet is that?)... then I have to enjoy those too, because I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I CAN'T WAIT!:D

I think Ill be doing low carb all week and save that for my high carb day.. might even try to get some squats out that morning for better partitioning of them :)
I definitly plan on eating at my regular 2 hr intervals before dinner so that Im less likely to overeat at dinner (I have a long, ugly history with that :)
I knoiw Ill get buttloads of leftovers anyway so Ill be trying to take it easy..
Now NEXT month when I go back HOME for dinner.. I know I wont have ANY problem taking it easy then (I can barley stomache my grandmothers cooking lol)!!

what a great thread!

Ok, being the typical type A personality I am, I have outlined my plan:

Phase One: Get the metabolism raised:
I am going to attempt to wake up early, eat a healthy breakfast, and get to a spinning class as a pre-emptive strike. The gym is hosting a T-Day 2 hour spin class. I am not sure I will last 2 hours. Ha! I am not even sure I will get out of bed, but it is a plan. If I miss the class, then I will just run and do lower body and core work. Either way, I am working out - no excuses.

Phase Two: Replenish
Next I am going to come home and replinsh myself with a nice lunch so I am not STARVING by the time I get to my parents for dinner.

Phase Three: Pick one house/one T-day
Normally I would go to my boyfriend's brother's house and my parents' house since they eat at 2 different times and then I usually get to have T-Day twice with double the leftovers. This year, I am only going to my parents house. I might visit his family AFTER we have dinner.

In my favor:
1. my sister arrives at the airport on T-day instead of the day before. Therefore we get to eat later and I will have already worked out and filled up on healthy stuff during the day.
2. my father is like me and perfers everything to be healthy (low fat, no sugar, etc) so my mom will probably cook things low fat. (Although, I have ofter wondered if she has tricked him over the years and just says it is healthy - it is not like he would know since he does not participate in the preparation! lol!!!)

Not in my favor:
1. my mother's sweet potatos - yikes!!!!
2. my mother's mashed potatos - yikes!!
3. future sister in law's jewish apple cake - oh no!!!
4. Left over from future mother in law!!!! AHHHHHH!!!! She will not take no for an aswer!!!!

Good luck everyone!!!!

Cynthia, I LOVE that movie! Classic Albert Brooks genius. :)

As for the question, that's an easy one. My strategy is to go to my SIL's house. She makes turkey with plastic-tasting barbeque sauce, and she makes her "sweet potato pudding" with a can opener. Of course Friday at my mother's house will be a no-holds-barred pig fest. Moderation shmoderation. :p

I agree that exercise first thing is on the agenda. I think KPC is on my rotation so that should be fine. Plus, I plan on eating my usual breakfast and a light lunch prior to my in laws house. They eat at 2, so if I don't eat something before, I will be famished and that is a BAD plan!

My MIL is a very unhealthy cook so I will probably try to fill up on turkey and salad. I am also trying a healthier recipe for Pumpkin Bars so I have something for dessert.

Hmm, what else? I want to take a walk after dinner or rake leaves or something active if the weather permits. Maybe I will make a nice apple oatmeal pudding dessert in the crock pot so it is waiting for me when I get home for evening snack...that way I won't overindulge if I know my favorite evening treat is waiting for me.
