Trying to Fit Yoga in for Tues July 24

Morning Ladies -

This morning I did Cycle- All Terrain with Brooke Hayward again (and survived ...whew!!). I didn't stand for the entire time on the rolling hills section cuz I didn't want to put too much pressure on my foot (didn't wear my boot). I loved the Sprints at the beginning and got my heartrate up to 162...which is the highest I've been able to get it since I've had this cold settled into my chest and aggravating my asthma. Workout was 64 minutes and I burned 460 calories. I also did Baron Baptiste's Unlocking Athletic Power 30".

My job interview this morning is in a bad section of town......or as I call it....The Hood! Funny thing is ...is that it's right down the street from the High School I went to ....and it wasn't a bad section back then! I guess it's been a while, huh??

Kel - I know what you mean about slow healing. I don't think my foot is going to be good enough for Vegas to walk without the boot. My DH doesn't want me to wear the boot. He's embarrased. He told me not to wear it to my interview either. I vote for the Pilates/Lotte Berk combo (or did you say Bar Method?? can't remember). I think the Lotte will be good for your legs. Do you have the Muscle Eats Fat one? If so, that one has a good Bonus Blast segment on it for the thighs. I have been adding it on to my workouts and I know it works for me.

Nope.....I can't let this stress fracture keep me down. I had one the Summer before last (thus the reason I now have this one from what the doctor said) and it was much worse than this one (full blown) and I never missed a workout or a day of work. I remember hopping around on one foot doing Cathe DVDs and modifying on the Rebounder the entire Summer. I actually didn't know I had a stress fracture at the time though...as they don't show up on initial x-rays and I went to the ER at work and had it x-rayed and they said negative....so I thought I was being a wimp. So I limped around on my foot for 3 months until I got a callus on my good foot that turned into a second degree burn and I had to go to a foot doctor to get that removed. He x-rayed my feet and said that the reason I couldn't walk all Summer is cuz I had a healing Stress Fracture. At that point, I explained how I modified aerobics and he said I was lucky I didn't displace it and need surgery...but it healed good.......or at least I thought until now I find out that sometimes they heal and bow out and cause the metatarsal next to it to be unstable and prone to a fracture (which is what happened to me). We leave for Vegas on 8-2 and the concert is on 8-3....so let's hope I don't have to wear my boot there....as I don't think that would go over well in the Mosh Pit!! Thanks for the info about the job. Sounds interesting. I'll let you know how it goes.

Jen - Thanks for the good luck wish....but at this point, I'm not holding my breath....since my track record with interviews has not been very good! I've been reading this AfterBurn book I bought and the more I read, the more I think of you. He's talking all about how it's inefficient to lose weight the way other programs have you do it...cuz when you lose weight, you lose muscle too and just become a smaller version of yourself and he says that's not "effective" weight loss. His program is all about building muscle to help burn fat while at rest and losing fat only! I keep thinking about what you always say! I think you'd like the program (maybe.....but it's mostly multi-joint movements....as he doesn't believe in working your bi's and tri's separately), but I don't think you'd want to pay the money for the book (and I don't blame you). There are some rotations on T-Nation by him though if you ever think you'd want to try one.

Well...best go get ready for my interview.

Have a great day ladies.

Hi FFFs! (That's Fellow Flexible Females, in case you don't remember from yesterday - LOL).

This morning I did Rainbeau Mar's Sacred Yoga Practice Pure Sweat, followed by Pure Power but I skipped most of the sun salutations since I already did them in Pure Sweat. These are really good yoga DVDs & I felt really worked out when I was done. Tomorrow, I have CC#3 on the schedule & I'm already looking forward to it. Hmmm... maybe I'm not a cardio hater after all. Nope, that's not it. I think I'm just a Sean lover! Anyway, one thing is for sure... I definitely feel a lot better working out & eating healthier so although I'm glad I took a rest week, I even more glad to be back working out again.

Lora - Yeah, I said Lotte Berke. I have 2 or 3 on video & one on DVD, Basic Essentials. I actually like the Basic Essentials workout because I feel like it works my whole body, even though it's probably the easiest of the series. But you can definitely feel it if you really focus & pay attention to form & doing the moves correctly. Unfortunately, the blast section isn't on my Muscle Eats Fat VCR copy & that's actually my least favorite in the series. So maybe I'll do Basic Essentials or High Round Assets & then add a short pilates routine on too. How does that sound? Oh my gosh, I don't think you should worry about your boot! I mean, you've got an injury & that's nothing to be embarrassed about. So I think you should wear it if you need to & don't worry about it. I'm sure it won't affect your interview either so good luck with that & please let us know how it goes.

Jen - Yes, I'm in better spirits this week. I guess I just needed to make it through a rough spot in my life. Sounds like you're still doing quite a bit of cardio. How's that working for you? I hope things settle down for you at work soon so you will have more time to hang around & chat.

I have a question for you ladies. I'm planning to start back on weights next week & right now, I'm planning on 3 days of cardio & only 2 days of weights. So I'm wondering if I should dive right back in & do PUB/PLB on Tuesday & Thursday but use lighter weights since I'll just be getting back into it after a short hiatus... or should I do SS/PP for slightly less intense, lighter weight workouts? Let me know what you think. If everything goes well next week, I'll get back to my "normal" routine during the first full week in August. Thank goodness!

Well, I guess I'll get back to work for now. Hope you ladies have a great day & I'll be sure to check back in later & see what's going on.

Kel - do you have any functional fitness type of workouts like the TLT's or first set of Tracey Long's?? If so, I'd do a couple functional fitness before I dove back into PUB. I think it's good to add a week of FF in every so often any way to work the stabilizers so you don't get injuries as often. There is a set I just bought off of Amazon called Fitness Fix and they are done by a girl who was in a horrible accident and all of the exercises are functional fitness done with a variety of equipment from balls to bands and have been physical therapist approved. I only have the beginner one so far, as my other 2 are on backorder, but they are getting rave reviews at Videofitness. Maybe you might be interested in purchasing something similar if you don't have any. Otherwise, what Cathe workouts do you have where she concentrates on FF? Isn't Drill Max supposed to concentrate on FF? Not sure.

Lotte Berk Essentials is my second favorite blast section to do. To tell you the truth, I've not really done the entire workouts on most of them for a long long time. I really don't back off my other training long enough to do those kinds of workouts and I keep saying I want to do that....but I'm not good at putting it on paper and figuring out a balanced plan....so I just tack the blasts on here and there. Some Day!!

I love Rainbeau Mars! Pure Sweat is one of my fave's. I've not yet done Pure Power. Have it on VHS. Is it good? Does she have other postures besides sun sal's in it? From what I've heard....it's tons of Sun sals. I wish she'd come out with her new stuff.

I'm really starting to get into this Spinning. I used to dread it, but today I actually sort of liked the torture. I just got a new DVD called Cy-yo. It's 10 minutes of yoga followed by 40 minutes of spinning and then another 10 minutes of yoga. It has rock music from local Boston bands and I'm previewing it right now. It rocks and I can't WAIT to do it. Never thought I'd say that about an interval spinning workout. Yikes!!

Re: the job interview.............the hours are great...benefits half decent and it sounds like something I'd be good at and would be happy at. Small family owned company. Office manager seems like a perfectionist and was telling me about the 5 secretaries they've been thru in a short period of time and went onto to tell me exactly why each one got fired or quit and what they did wrong. GOOD info to know!! It is an entry level position and doesn't pay crap.....but I told her I have NO problem with that and I really need a job and am very intersted and I really hope she will consider me and then I made sure to try to tell her things about myself and ways that I work to make myself sound good (from what she told me about what others did that she didn't like). I'm not a phony person and I have low self esteem so it's very hard for me to build myself up.....but I tried to sound good.....so we'll see what happens. Only thing is I do wonder if the office manager is part of the reason the people keeep quitting or getting fired......from some of the stuff she told me. For instance....said she asked one secretary to do something 3 times and she never did it and so she called her into the office to talk about it and the secretary said the office manager was mean to her and rolled her eyes at her all the time and the President of the company said......"well if she asked you to do something 3 times and you didn't do it, maybe you deserved to get eyes rolled at you".......things like that made me wonder.....but I need a job....so whatever.

Anyway....enough of my book................later.

Lora - Hmmm... I don't know if I even own any FF workouts since I love weight training so much. I'll have to look when I get home & let you know if I even have any but if not, what do you suggest? I wonder if I could even find anything in any of the local stores around here? Probably not. I do have several stability ball DVDs, though. Would those work or are you basically suggesting that I stay away from the upper body weights completely for another week, just to be sure? If that's the case, I guess I could do Pilates Plus with Michelle Dozois or something like that. But I'd really like to get back to weights so I was thinking that perhaps I could start back with Supersets on Tuesday, using lighter weights for upper body if I feel the need, & Push Pull on Thursday, again using lighter weights if I need to. Monday, Wednesday, & Friday would be cardio, probably CCs again. How does that sound? I'll still look at my home collection & let you know what I have, though. I have tons of workouts that I never use anymore, even though I think they're good enough to keep... so I'd be surprised if I didn't have something that would work. I didn't buy the new(er) series, except for Cardio Fusion, so I don't have Drill Max. Of course, I've been wanting them so I'm sure I'll end up with them at some point.

I'll probably do Basic Essentials on Thursday & add on the bonus/blast section & maybe another short pilates section too then. That sounds good. I would do another yoga routine but I know I'll feel like doing something that feels like more of a "real" workout by then. You know? I like those Rainbeau Mars DVDs too but they both begin with an extensive sun salutation warmup & sun salutations aren't my favorite. That's why I fast forwarded past them on Pure Power. She does some moves that do require some strength & balance in this one, though, so it's definitely true to its name. I think I like Sweat a little better, though.

I looked up those Fitness Fix workouts & they sound really good too. Gosh, I could go absolutely broke buying workouts & I know you can relate - LOL. I also looked into that spinning workout & it sounds great too... but I don't have a bike so I think I'll be able to avoid that one - LOL. I'm sure you'll enjoy it, though, so let us know what you think.

Sounds like your job interview went well to me! It also sounds like something you would enjoy so I hope you get it. I don't know what to say about the reasons the other secretaries were fired or quit but I know that some personalities click & others don't. So maybe this is the job for you! I'll keep my fingers crossed...

Well, I guess I'll leave it at that for now. I'll be sure to check back again later, though. See ya!

Kel - Let me know what you have lying around and I'll tell you if I think any are functional fitness. The moves you do in FF are sometimes just done balancing to bring your core more into play. Tracey Staehle does weight workouts that are FF related.....but Tracey Long does FF well also. The Fitness Fix one looks good. An example of some of the moves that are FF related are standing wood chops ....where you hold a DB and act like your picking up a stack of books from a shelf on the left and then you bend, twist and rotate with the DB and bring it to the ground on the right while bending. It is meant to mimic things you do in every day life....like moving a box, lifting a child, etc. and it works all of the smaller stabilizing muscles that get overlooked in a traditional weight workout. Traditional weight work is good, but if you do nothing for your stabilizers (in essense your support structures) then you are just asking for trouble in getting injured thru a traditional weight lifting movement.

Other instructors have you balance on one leg or on a stability ball and do weight exercises and this brings the core more into play which helps your balance, etc. FF workouts also are said to burn more calories than traditional exercise since you use your core and the core is such a large muscle group.

Let's see. Here's Tracey's website if you want to read up on Functional Fitness

www.TracieLongTraining.com

Tracey Staehle's is www.fitbytracey.com

Also, yoga and pilates are both functional fitness type of training.....but the sites above incorporate weights with it.

Just glanced thru Cathe's catalog and she has Muscle Endurance listed as giving "functional fitness gains" and if you don't have that one, I'd choose the one you said is on the stability ball....as the ball brings your core muscles into play a bit more.

Me again........geez I'm on a roll today, huh??

I forgot to mention that I got my other Firm Multipack and was checking them out a bit last night. I'll have to try them to see what I think. A couple of them look good and I'm not sure about a couple others. I don't like the one instructor and she's in 2 of them. I'm gonna go out in the living room with my boot on and see how much pressure I can put on my foot in my boot without having pain in my foot.....in other words, I'm itching to try my new Firms!! maybe I'll modify parts on the rebounder and some on the floor.
