Training Question

I want to get my arms as defined as I can in a month for a special event even if it means slightly overtraining and eating low cal b/c I know it's a temporary thing. I cant do high impact cardio. Would you think it would be okay to alternate full upper body workouts like Muscle Max, Power Hour etc with a day of circuit training like C&W, or something like Janis Saffell's Kickbox Circuit which isnt really too heavy on the resistance?? Too much straight cardio wears on my knee. Thanks.

This is a topic where opinnions could differ. Some say it would be okay as long as you kept the circuit training weights on the light side. Others would say not to work the same body part with weights 2 days in a row ever...I tend to agree with the first opinnion myself...:)

Do push-ups and pull-ups.

Push-ups: as many on your toes as possible then finish out on your knees

pull-ups: will probably need modification since these are so hard but worth every effort.

I am with Sarah on the pushups and pullups, they are the best arm shapers!!!! They get EVERYTHING!

I had an AWESOME regime that I did after baby #2 to get my arms back, and they were awesome! Here is what I did:

Mon - Wed - Fri, so 3 sets of as many pullups as I could do, then do four sets of 20 push ups on my toes. If I got fatigued and couldn't do all of the pushups, then I would go down on my toes on a ten-count, then up one count on my knees. In between sets up push ups and pullups, I allowed myself only one minute to stretch my muscles out before banging it out again.
I did 1/2 hour cardio on Mon-Wed-Fri and an hour cardio on Tue-Sat.

When the pushups got too easy, I added five to each set.

My arms were so hot! Now that I think about it, I should do this again!

Good luck!

Thanks for the idea! However, I dont have a pull up bar...tried one once at a friend's house, um, coudnt even do one! I cant do ANY pushups on my toes either, I'm a wimp, but I can definitely start working on pushups on my knees! I'll start tonight!

Surely you can do ONE push-up on your toes!!! Do one on your toes then do the rest on your knees. Go until you cannot push yourself up at all versus just stopping when your tired. Before you know it, you'll be doing 20 on your toes.

Pull-up bars can be pretty cheap. I bought mine for $15 but it is screwed into the doorway. You can do assisted pull-ups using bands or a chair. Again, it is the "attempt" that really defines the muscles. I can do 2 unassisted pull-ups on a good day. The rest...all with help.

Sarah....
which doorway did you put your bar on? I used to go to the gym, but since we got rid of our membership, I haven't done any pullups ;( I want a bar, but don't know where I could put it where there isn't much "traffic". Suggestions?

Personally, I wouldn't work my arms every day, even with low weights, and especially when I go with lower calories. Muscle is active and needs nourishment. They also need time to recover. Breaking them down every day PLUS underfeeding is simply not a good idea IMHO.

Missy's suggestion of push-ups and pull-ups Mon/Wed/Fri with half-hour cardio sessions is very sensible. Very tough, but effective. I'd like to try this sometime.:)
