Training question

Amysue

Cathlete
Hi! I'm a newly signed on and in need of some advice. Does anyone have any exercises that would target the forearms? Although I don't want to look like Popeye, I think it could help my climbing endeavors?
Thanks for any input.

No exercises, but...

...I'd advise you to watch your spinach intake.

Forearms

Hi Amysue! I'm not an expert, but I believe a couple of good exercises are a reverse curl and barbell rows with an underhand grip. For the reverse curls hold either a barbell or dumbells (I prefer dumbells) and act like you're going to do a bicep curl but have your palms facing down. Don't curl all the way to your shoulder, just until your forearms are parallel to the ground. Cathe remarks in Pure Strength Back Biceps and Abs that using an underhand grip when doing the barbell row develops more forearm strength. I don't know if this really makes it a forearm exercise, or if it's just an added benefit. I'd also be interested in hearing about your climbing. My sister and I did the wall climbing in Utah last year and it DOES indeed take a great deal of forearm strength to do this. Hope some one else can come up with some additional exercises for you.

Cory's GHAS

Amysue:
Cory's Get Hard Arms & Shoulders has a section in it where she works the forearms. I swear, I've seen a real difference in that area of my arms since I've started that tape.

Just a thought. How it might help with your climbing progress, I have no clue!

Hi AmySue!!

I do work my forearms, but I never thought to ask if shouldn't because it's always worked for me. So maybe Cathe will be able to tell you if what I do is indeed OK. I hold my arms as if I were going to do a bicep curl, but instead bend at the wrist palms facing up. Bend slowly with about 5lbs for about 12 reps. Then flip your palms over so that your palms are facing down and flex the wrist up for about 12reps. Well, that's it. Remember, slow and controlled and not too heavy of a weight! Good Luck!!

Thanks for the great advice!

Elizabeth,
Thanks for all the great ideas for working my forearms!I will try it! It can only help with my climbing, since that is the area of my body that seems to scream after a long day of clinging to rocks! That's the major reason I started using Cathe's tapes...to increase my upper body strength and overall endurance, which is needed to climb well. I have been climbing/mountaineering with my husband for about 10 years. It's so rewarding to reach a summit and know that it was your own resolve and strength that took you there! It's an addictive feeling!
Again, thanks for the advice.

Hi, Aimee!

I love your new spelling...it's so en francais... the French verb "to love/to like" is aimer. So, "J'aime votre nom aussi!" I like your name also! Keep in touch!

Why thank you very much;-)

So, what did you think of the exercises? Were they OK? I love the French, I panicked though when I first started reading it, thenI laughed and told my husband that you need to give me french lessons. Thank you for tell me what that meant

! How long have you been rock climbing I've always wanted to try that, but don't have any idea where to start or where it's at. Any info you could give me on this would be great! Thanks

French rock climbing

Hi Aimee,
Just kidding about French rock climbing, although my husband did climb there! By the way, I loved your exercises! I can hardly throw the ball to the dog today! I will continue them faithfully!
If you live on the east coast, there are few really great places to try out rock climbing and take a few beginner classes. Seneca Rocks, WV has two climbing schools and the Shawangunks at the Mohonk Preserve in New York probably has some climber guides. Both are gorgeous places to visit, even if you don't climb. If you'd like the name of the climbing school in Seneca, I can get you a name and number. We are pretty good friends with those guys!
Have a great day! Au revoir! (goodbye)
Amy

I thought Au revoir meant

until we meet again. That will teach me to think!

Actually, I got that out of a romance novel. He He! Anyway, where is that place in WV? I live in OH, but have family who lives down there{Charelston} we usually go there for a family reunion every year or so. Please , please, please get me the name and number! It's sounds wonderful

! So, where did your husband climb at in France? That's got to be gorgeous over there!

Hello Aimee!

Just back from a long weekend of riding our tandem bike on the Rail Trail near Ohiopyle. We put in over a hundred miles, so it's hard to sit here for very long!
I will get you the phone number for the Gendarme (another French word!) at Seneca Rocks, WV. They can also rent you a pair of climbing shoes while you are learning.
My husband climbed Mt. Blanc, in Chaminiox (spelling?) and he also climbed the Eiger, the Matterhorn and he's climbed in Patagonia and Canada as well. Heck, he even found a primo spot on the Baja of Mexico where we could climb right on the beach! Talk about an awesome vacation!
We had planned on going to the Italian Alps this fall to climb, but he's still recovering from a broken foot and arm. We are planning a trip to Yosemite instead and saving Italy for next year!
Have a great day and I'll get that number for you!

Hi Amy!

Your poor husband! Man, what a bad rap

Climbing info

Hi, Amy -- Ohiopyle is a small town in southern PA. There is a wonderful trail along the Yough River that was converted from an old railroad track. It's very beautiful with lots of nice views, waterfalls and bridges.
The number for Seneca Rocks Climbing School is 304-567-2115 and the number for the Gendarme is 304-567-2600. I really hope you get a chance to try climbing! It's thrilling, physically and mentally challenging! Everything a sport should be!
Stay in touch!

Thanks Amy!!

I'll post and let you know when I get to go. This is something I've always wanted to try, so I'm definately NOT going to let any fears or anything else hold me back

! Thanks again!!
