Total Body Workouts

Hello,

How many times per week can I do a total body strength workout without possibly overtraining and not giving my body enough time to rest, but do enough to see some gains?

Thanks for any input.

Hi Kimmy,

I have done total body strength workouts 3 times a week. You should always give your body 48 hours to "heal." Monday, Wednesday, Saturday is what I usually do if I'm trying to do total body 3 times a week. HOWEVER, I never do this for more than 6 weeks for fear of overtraining.

When I do these types of workouts, I find I get decent strength gains but not as good as when I do upper and lower body separately. I do tend to lean out a little more this way.

Hope that helps.

Not Cathe...

Every 48 hours is usually recommended, but if you want to do total body weights that often, you need to make sure you don't do too much, ie if you are still sore, you might need longer to recover. From what I've read, the muscles recover in about 36 hours, but soreness lasting longer than that is due to the central nervous system being over taxed.

A fairly new theory is that you get more strength and muscle gains if you work the muscles every 48 hours (something to do with the repeated bout effect), but in order to do that you have to find an intensity that allows you to recover in time for the next workout.

Another older, but still more popular theory is that you should work each muscle as intensely as possible (by splitting different body parts on different days), then allow a whole week to recover before working that muscle again.
