Just take care. You don't want arthritis at 40. I have a baketball player and a soccer player . Tore the ACL and one the miniscus also. The Basketball player is 18 and is having trouble since she did it 1 1/2 yrs ago.
I yell at her for still playing. Like you don't even get paid for HS basketball...

I tore my ACL

in 1990, while downhill skiing. When I tore it, it hurt like a well, you know :) Anyway, I had an Orthopedic Surgeon who specialized in Sports Medicine do my repair. It was very painful and my recovery was not easy. In fact, I grow scar tissue at an unbelievable rate, and I couldn't get total flexion and extension of my knee approx 6 weeks after surgery, so I had to go in and have arthroscopic knee surgery to get the scar tissue out. Lots and lots of Physical Therapy. I was much younger (and DUMBER) then too, and I really didn't give PT my all, nor did I do the required exercises at home. You just need to be commited to your recovery. If I was back then, I think things would have definately been easier. Do I regret having it done....Not one bit. I couldn't do any lateral movement before my repair.

Good luck to you,

Becky

RE: I tore my ACL

I fell last spring and injuried my ACL...Thank God it was just stretched...still painful and I had to do PT...still a little touchy...Maybe just maybe your's is not torn. My prayers are with you.

RE: I tore my ACL

I got my ACL repaired about 4 years ago. I took a couple of months to get back into the swing of things. But I was off my crutches after, I think, 2 weeks and was working out, on a bike, or low impact step, after about a month. I can't quite remember the exact time, and I could be off by a little. But it wasn't too bad. Not as bad as my sil described. But she had hers about 10 years before. So recovery, and the procedure itself had gotten far better since then.
You're in good shape, I'm sure, so you'll recover faster. Just be sure to eat lots of fruits and veggies and drink lots of water. It will help with both the swelling and recovery.

RE: I tore my ACL

I tore my ACL and miniscus ligaments about 10 years ago. I had the surgery, and went home two days afterwards. They put my leg on a machine that made it move back and forth. I was on crutches for a few months, and went through a few weeks of physical therapy. It was painful, but not as painful as living with the problem!
I was then instructed to ride the stationary bike(the recumbent one) and did that for a few months before returning to normal higher impact activities.
Now, it never has really bothered me at all, I am 40 now and was always worried about getting arthritis in it, but nope, it is strong. I think the therapy and the mild exercise I did afterwards to encourage mobility really helped it heal correctly. Good luck to you!

Yup! I tore mine in August doing some roundhouse kicks in Tae Kwon Do class. I had surgery on September 25 and am getting ready to go back to TKD in a couple weeks.

I never even considered not having the surgery because I was told that I wouldn't be able to do any of the physical exercising that I enjoy anymore. Sure, I could do physical activities, but all the boring ones that make me want to scream.

For my surgery, he took a piece of my patellar tendon and grafted it to my femur and tibia to make a "new" ACL. They also can do it by using part of your hamstring, or by taking the ACL from a cadaver. Just make sure you have a surgeon with a very good reputation. Not all produce the same results. My surgeon works on our professional hockey team, so I was reasonably sure he knew what he was doing.

If you get the surgery, you're in for a couple weeks in an immobilizer and crutches and a decent amount of pain, but nothing unbearable. Then you'll have about 4-6 months of physical therapy. You'll lose most of your thigh strength and it will take a good year to build it back up to where it was before the injury. My knee still gets a bit stiff when I've been sitting for a long time, but loosens up pretty quickly when I walk around.

Overall, I'd say it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. If you've been a regular exerciser (which I guess you would be since you're posting on Cathe.com), the therapy will be a piece of cake.

I am finding that while I watch my daughter's tae kwon do class, I get very nervous when I see them doing jumping roundhouse kicks. I don't know how I'll get the guts to do those again! I don't EVER want to go through the torn ACL thing again.

Looking over the posts of the others who have had it in the past...you REALLY have to make sure you follow the doctor's instructions. It's not uncommon to develop the problem with the scar tissue, but if you keep your leg extended in the immobilizer whenever you're not exercising it, you should be OK. PT starts at home like 1 or 2 days after the surgery. And it's an outpatient procedure. Go in, get put under....leave a few hours later.

Christy, I just wanted to pop on and say I am so sorry! Did you fall on the ice? I have a friend who wore her flip-flops to her mailbox in the snow and fell and broke her ankle. Wishing you a quick remedy and super fast healing. Keep us posted.

Hi Debbie! How have you been?

Yes I slipped down the drive and fell with my legs twisted inwards. It took a little while to get up, but I finally did. I had an MRI done last Thursday and the doc, says it's partially tore. He wants me to go to a knee specialist next Wednesday to see if we should go through with surgery. I'm hoping I won't need it. I can't really afford to be down and out for an extended period of time! :(

Hi Christi! I am doing good, thanks! Oh, how awful...it must have been so painful. I sooo hope you don't require surgery. There is never a good time to be down & out. Wishing you the best! Thanks for reminding me to be very careful in this terrible weather. BIG HUGS!

Hi Christie!

I don't have any useful advice for you -- I just wanted to send a shout-out, a big hug and to say that I'm so sorry about your injured ACL. :-( You could have hurt yourself even worse with a fall like that, I would imagine, so thank goodness for little blessings, right?

Your weight loss has been fantastic, by the way, and that'll certainly be a great thing when you're healing! :)

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and hope that the doc will not feel surgery is necessary. But take it easy and allow yourself time and patience to heal, okay???

((((((((((HUGS)))))))))!!!!!

Hi Christie,

Sorry about your injury. :(

I tore my ACL skiing back in Feb 2005, and just had the reconstruction surgery exactly 3 months ago today. The doc used a couple of my hamstring tendons to build the new ACL.

The first 7-10 days after the surgery was the worst part, due to the pain and swelling, but once that went down my general mobility came back fairly quickly. During that time, I was doing strength and ROM exercises 4 times a day. The athletic trainer that works with the doc assigned different exercises that I was to start doing beginning the day of the surgery. They weren't fun to do, but they really did help a lot with getting back on my feet. I was on crutches for about 10 days.

At 2 weeks post-op, I started physical therapy two days a week. They immediately got me on an exercise bike and started adding in more strength and flexibility stuff, including BOSU work, YEAH! At 7-8 weeks, the PT visits went down to once a week, and this week I got the OK to do all my PT at home.

I'm currently OK to do most straight-line low-imapact cardio (bike, elliptical, stair climber) as I please, and I can jog lightly on a treadmill. My PT also let me start doing some plyometric stuff as well - my training has been very skier focused and rather aggressive.

I'm definitely glad I had the surgery. While the recovery is a lot of work and working out, it's great to have a knee that feels strong again, even though it'll be another 6-9 months before it's back to normal. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions.

Take care. I hope your appointment with the specialist goes well.

Donna-
I was wondering where you have been. So you are on the mend; welcome back to the forum girl!

I'm sorry Christi! I have been quite blessed when it comes to my knee's. if you have surgery, I agree with the other posters about listening to your doctor. I also agree with you being so active it will make recovery alot faster...Let us know what the specialist says...:)
