Too much step?

Hi All,

Is it okay to do a step workout everyday as my only type of cardio workout?

I thought I read something here about the subject, but now I can’t find it, and I know a lot of you alternate between running/other forms of cardio and cathe’s step workouts… Any advice? TIA…

Hello:

I also am a step addict, but I force myself to add kickboxing, elliptical stepper, hiking, recumbant biking and horseback riding. I have found that over the years my body becomes adapted to one type of exercise if I dont vary my cardio (and weights) a bit. I cease to feel any soreness (I love DOMS) if I dont challenge myself with variety. Also, step can be hard on the knees and lower back if you dont give your body a rest from it. By varying your exercise you also cut down on the repetitive injury possibility. At least this is true for me.

Definitely alternate with at least one other type of workout. Even though I LOVE kickboxing, I know the benefit of cross training (reducing injury risk, as Suzanne mentioned, as well as working the muscles in a different way, as well as not letting your body adapt to any one form of cardio and making sure you don't plateau) so I alternate kickboxing with step, hi-lo, rebounding, etc.

Edited to add: You COULD do step as you only cardio, if you put one day in between your cardio workouts, and only do it 3 times a week. But it would still be beneficial to cross train.
