Tipping question

Cathlete
I had furniture delivered the other day and I tipped the delivery men. One piece was broken & I refused delivery. Tomorrow they are going to deliver a new one. Do I tip again?

In one sense, I am annoyed b/c it is going to cost me more due to a piece being broken. In another, why should this delivery guy get jipped? If it just so happens to be the same guy, I think I would feel better but chances are, it won't be.

What do you ladies think?

oh, that's a toughie. Maybe tip, but give a smaller one than normal, if it is the same guy? tip the same if a new guy? I am not sure what the correct etiquette is. I have never had furniture delivered!

ahh sorry i cant be of more help! - tina

i guess it would depend if it was the same person or not, and how the service was(were they polite, deliver in the time frame they said they would)and probably not tip as much. i am sure they won't mind to much, they probably don't have many customers that tip them.

Wow, it would never occur to me to tip a furniture delivery person!!! Huh. I think you're right, though!!! Sheesh- who am I not tipping out there?!

Clearly, you aren't tipping if you think they're the reason the furniture is broken. My DH would absolutely say "it isn't his fault" and tip. Since he's worked in a tipping business since he was in high school, I bow to his expertise.

Then again, it wouldn't occur to me to tip the guys in the first place... ;)

Timber, I had a similar experience. I bought a new piece of furniture from North Carolina and the leg cracked on the secretary desk when they slid it into position. In my case, the delivery of the replacement piece wasn't until several weeks later. I had the same delivery men on both occasions and I tipped the same amount each time.

But Christine, how do you know it's not his fault? He could've broken it while loading or unloading it off the truck.

I think the tip for the original move was enough. Like, when the pizza delivery guy takes too long & your pizza shows up cold, you don't know if it's his fault or not, but you'd tip him less. Or if your food doesn't taste good or takes too long at a restaurant, you tip your waiter less.

Unless you're positive it wasn't his fault, I wouldn't tip a second time.

My DH has a tendancy to tip anyone who does anything. I am just the opposite. Doesn't everyone earn a paycheck from their employer? With the exception of the restaurant industry/beauty salon I don't tip.

As an ex-auto claim adjuster, wouldn't it have been nice if I got a tip everytime I settled a claim with a satisfied cutomer. Maybe I could have agreed on a percentage of the settlement. Geez - earn your paycheck and don't always be looking for that little something extra.

I agree that tipping can really get out of hand. There's a tipping website and some of their suggestions for tips are outrageous. I do tip most people in the service industry. I don't think any of them make much money, and I also think you get better service when you do.

I tip furniture movers/delivery men if they do a good job because it's really hard work and doesn't pay well. Even if something is damaged enroute--it's impossible to know whose fault that is. Things can shift in a truck and stuff just happens. I don't think they intentionally harm your things.

I kind of get irritated in places like certain restaurants that put a tip jar on the counter but don't come to your table to take your order or bring you your food. That really annoys me.

I'm cheap. I wouldn't have tipped them the first time x( I figure if this is the profession they choose, they know the consequences.

there are some that automatically add the tip to your bill, which is WRONG IMO. if i think the service was good i will tip and if it was outstanding then i will tip a bit more then usual, but if i was treated rudely or neglected as a customer why should i tip??????i have had ppl not even bring our drinks until our meal was ready b/c she/he was to busy chatting with a hostess or a friend that is just there for no reason, not ordering not working just there. sorry didn't mean to go off on a tanget. dh is a chef and these are things you see often in a resturant that just make the whole place look bad
