This drives me crazy!!

I know I shouldn't let what other people do bother me. But I have a coworker who is 47 and had a transient ischemia attack (mini stroke) in November. You would think that would be an eye opening experience. I am just amazed at how she eats!! Fast food and not the healthy choices. She every so often switches to slim fast for lunch only because she has gained weight. Then a few days later back to the same old thing. She has asked me before for advice. You all know how that goes- in one ear and out the next. Why wouldn't you change after such a dramatic medical problem???? I just don't get it!!

Sorry for the rant!

Oh man, Catherine, this sounds like my FIL. Thankfully he hasn't had a serious medical issue yet, but he deals with high blood pressure. He eats like crap and literally sits on the couch all day. I think their cat moves more than he does. His idea of a workout is actually getting off the couch to see what food is in the kitchen. He won't change until he has a heart attack or something equally as serious, and he doesn't listen to a word we say. It is sad, isn't it? Some people unfortunately have to learn the very hard (and often quite sad) way. Ultimately it is up to them.

Perhaps she has an eating disorder (just b/c someone is overweight doesn't mean that they can't have an eating disorder). Or maybe she doesn't care? Or perhaps she is uneducated in what are the healthy choices when it comes to fast food? I know you said she asked for nutrition advice but who knows if she really listened. You or I could view her recovery from a mini-stroke as a second chance at life but possibly it didn't scare her?

I have an ex-friend who had a very aggressive type of cancer, had both her breasts removed @32 years of age and continues to smoke?????? I can't figure people out.

<sigh> I think we all have someone like that. Last March my 300 lb boss fell off a 3 step staircase, landed on his shoulder, shattered it & ended up in surgery for 5 hours. Out of work for almost 2 months. Every since I've been gently nudging him to cut out at least some of the sugar in his diet (he must drink at least 4 liters of Coke a day) & maybe go out for a walk a few times a week, but he has not changed his lifestyle at all.

Not to mention his dad died of a heart attack at 54, & he just turned 51.

Now I'm ranting. Bottom line, some people will just never change.

It reminds me of a woman where I used to work. I didn't know her, but she sat near me and I heard her hacking cough and her complaints about bouts of bronchitis. She was about 50-75 lbs overweight. What really got me was seeing her go out almost hourly for a smoke break AND she was parked right near the entrance in a handicapped spot (yeah, she had one of those things on her rear-view mirror). PUH-LEEZ!!!!!

I guess being a health care professional makes it eat at me more. I don't know how many times I have counseled my patients on the dangers of this kind of lifestyle and many of them already have had heart attacks etc. I think humans are self destructive- we smoke, overeat, don't exercise, drink,...... We all must have a death wish subconsciously. I know that many people don't know how to eat clean or healthy, but this lady that I am talking about is now on lipitor and still eats french fries. You can not tell me she doesn't know that's not healthy!! I don't believe in going cold turkey I think it's best to make gradual changes. But I see very little changing with her. I guess I just worry that she's headed down the path to even bigger problems.
