Thinking of cutting my hair!

As you can see from my picture trail my hair is long and curly and I am going through a pahse right now, where I think I would like to cut if off.
I just get so tired of all this hair and all the gel I put into it.But I would like to cut a few inches off, maybe layer it and start straigtening it.The thing is, I don't think I can have it short enough to straigthen but long enough to leave curly.
I know alot of people think my hair is beautiful and somedays I love it but there are some days where I wish I could just put my hands through it and comb it. I have had the same do for YEARS!
Anyone else out there have curly hair and cut it a bit short?
Lori:)

You DO have beautiful hair Lori! It's so hard to take that giant step. I don't have curly hair so I can't help. I am getting mine cut tomorrow and a bit nervous about it. I just want something easy for vacation. I'll let you know how it goes. BTW, your hair looks great curly and I loved it straightened too. Good Luck on whatever you decide.

Well, mine's curly and short. But I think you should just take off a few inches. Better yet, go to a fabulous stylist and let them give you suggestions. My style is by my stylist Lina. I could never have come up with it myself. She's awesome. In any event, with your gorgeous face, anything will look great!

Hi Lori,

About two years ago, I had long wavy hair that I got lots of compliments on, that drove me crazy. It was always getting snarled and it took forever to untangle it. There was no way I could ride in a car with the windows rolled down.

I cut it all off. I now have it clippered to about 1/2" on the sides and cut to about 3/4" of an inch on top so it'll spike. It was one of the most liberating things I've ever done. I also got lots of compliments on the short hair. :)

Just think, if you do cut it and don't like it, you can always just let it grow back. Good luck!

Hi Mar!

Or, is it Mare? ha! We are headed to Myrtle Beach for a couple days, then down to Charleston to site see, then Beaufort, SC to visit some friends and finally ending up in Florida to visit both of my sisters. Sooo, it is def NOT a stay-at-home vacation! Any plans for you?

I would suggest taking off a few inches and getting used to it. Then more if you want to, but slowly.

Yes, it will grow back, but trust me-growing your hair out is horrible!! I have very short hair and decided I want to let it grow back to shoulder length. I am now about 6 weeks past when I would have normally gotten it cut. I am hating it and every single day I wonder if I should just give in and get it cut. It's just awful. It's at the stage where it's too long to have any body and just hangs on my head, flat. Ugh!!

So don't make up your mind too fast---or at least don't do anything too drastic.

I now will have to invest in some barrets (sp?) which on a 39 year old are NOT cute. LOL

Hi Nancy,

I see you're from New York. Have you ever heard of the Ouidad Salon? It's somewhere in NY and they specialize in naturally curly hair. I've been ordering their products online for a couple of years and their stuff is great. I especially like the "Curl Quencher" line. and the conditioner called "Deep Treatment". Someday I would like to come to NY and get my hair cut. There isn't anyone around here that specializes in curly hair. :-(

Lori,

Only do what you think you would be comfortable with. Your hair is beautiful right now, but I'll bet it is a lot of work. The nice thing about hair is that nothing is permanent!! And I'll bet you will look pretty no matter what!! Just last week I colored mine, the darkest it has ever been!! I love it now, but what a shock when I first saw it!

Hi Lori. I had long curly hair for years. I would never part with it even tho it was such a pain to take care of. Plus it was like a rug on my head it's so thick! Last year I finally took the plunge. Well a few inches at a time. And I've kept it short ever since. I went shorter and shorter every time I went back.

DH used to tell me,"don't ever cut your hair". Now he tells me he loves it short, likes it better! I'd go a little at a time if you're really thinking about it. Then if you don't like it, it'll grow back. I think you would look beautiful no matter how you wear your hair! :) I say Go for it!

Lori, trust me - don't cut your hair! I have very similar hair and I frequently go through the cut phase...don't do it! I know it's a pain w/ products, etc. but isn't it better to let it dry naturally and get compliments? Straightining is so time consuming and really, so many people have straight hair, do you really want to look like everyone else? I wish I had straight hair sometimes too, the grass is always greener, isn't it? Maybe you could do some color to change it up a little...

I completely understand your frustrations. I've had long hair for a long time, and when I cut it "short" it's still below my chin! I've lately been thinking of coloring mine, which is a very scary thought as well as cutting.

I got mine cut in May to be shoulder-length and loved the "little bippy pigtail" I got out of it. Great for summer, and super quick!

Mine isn't curly, it's more frizzy/wavy, but I can't imagine cutting it short. I really like Nancy's hair. Can you print out her photo and ask the stylist what they think of that for you? ;)

I agree with going to a stylist you trust and talking it out with him/her.

Good luck!!

I had long hair for years and it started to define who I was. I got compliment after compliment and people always said whatever you do don't cut you hair. I felt trapped in all of it. One day after untangling it for an hour, I made an appointment and got a short bob and WOW! talk about liberating. I felt sexier and free. Who new I could have a short shower and not have to blow dry my hair for hours. I say go for it. There are so many things about our lives that we can't change, but hair is not one them. I say go for it!

I say DON'T cut it. My sister has corkscrew curls like you and has such a pretty face with beautiful bone structure, but the few times she cut it, it was not her best look. I have a feeling that would the same with you. Did you decide anything yet?

Hi Ladies,
Its not someting I am going to rush in to and I have done it before. I have probably cut my hair off, on 3 seperate occasions and almost cried each time.I was at a wedding last weekend and one of the girls there had awesome hair.It was little below shoulder length and had layers.I get lots of compliments when I straigthen it as well.
I do like my hair it just feels like this is what I am known for....or its my safety net.My mom would be so mad at me!
Lori:)

My hair is quite curly with a tendency to frizz. I've had it long, short and everything in between. I've found that something about shoulder lenghth, with just a tiny bit of layering, works best for me. It's not so long that it gets snarled, but it's long enough - and besides, I found out that I look pretty rough with short hair. And oddly enough, short hair was such a pain for me. My curls just got curlier, and I had no control over it at all.

I think I'm with the majority here - take it in stages. You said you've tried it short before but "almost cried," so I'd keep some of the lenghth on it if I were you.

DON'T DO IT! I have curly hair too. I cut it above shoulder length in 1998, I looked like the female version of Buckwheat, I've spent the last 7 years trying to grow it back.

Get new color, get bangs, get layers or something, but DO NOT CUT YOUR CURLY HAIR SHORT.

Michele--I got my hair cut at Ouidad & it was awful! It cost $125 plus tip, I was there for like 2 hours--I'm saying to the stylist, if you think I'm gonna spend this kind of time on my hair every day you're crazy.

Anyway, it wasn't even a very good cut. They left the dry ends on & after I washed & shampooed on my own it looked like crap. Their products are good, their haircuts aren't so good.

I have very naturally curly hair and my sister is even more so. We both had longer hair for years - but both have cut it off in the past several years. What was really nice for me - is that I can leave it curly if I want to (my lazy morning days) - or flat iron or use a bigger curling iron to style it in different ways. My sisters hair is even more curly - so much so that she cant even leave it curly for a day. It shrinks up into little tight ringlets - but she has the cutest straight hair style. Even for the hair at the base of her neck that 1/2" long - she is able to make them straight.

We have an advantage too - because the natural curl brings natural body and our hair holds styles/curl better. But I know exactly what you mean about not running your fingers or brushing you hair during the day - can you say MASS FRIZZIES!! :)

If you go with something more shoulder length and layered around the bottom and a few wispy longer bangs - you have so many options - leave it curly for the day - blow it out and put a flip out at the bottom - blow out and curl under at the bottom - or in a cute pony - makes it much more versitile. I could style my hair differetly every day of the week if I wanted too... Just remember with a flat iron to use some extra leave in protectant or conditioner and use a ceramic flat iron to help keep your hair healthy.

My sister actually straightened her hair to make it easier and offset the frizzes in humidity. My hairdresser used a process that is much easier and cheaper than Thermal Reconditioning (which is very expensive) and she loves it. No more frizzes in the rain and easier to do in the mornings...

Good luck with your decision - but like my hairdresser says - most women look better with shorter hair - to frame the face and much more versatile...

NOTE: Make sure you get someone that knows about curly hair - It shrinks when it is dry - I have had a few nightmare way too short bangs for someone getting carried away and not realizing that my hair shrinks up!!

Lori, I wouldn't do it either. Or if you did do it in stages like others have said. I, too, have natural curly hair. It can be such a pain sometimes. I once got so fed up I did exactly what you're planning on doing and hated it. I had just had my first child, needed to lose the baby weight, and then I added a terrible haircut! Not too happy then, but at least I had my new baby to keep me occupied!

I still have moments now where I feel like I want to cut it off, but then I think I can at least put it up in a clip or pony tail. I straighten my hair too, but with three little ones don't always have the time for that. You're hair looks great either way.

I have gone shoulder length, not by my choice - another bad hair cut. However, once that grew out a bit. I loved that, but I only liked it straightened. It was too short to leave curly. I probably felt like Maximus when it was curly - Buckwheat, I think was her comparison. LOL!

Anne, you have nice curly hair, BTW. That's a cute style, but I still think my hair would be too puffy with that particular style. Very cute on you though! :)

Oh, the problems we girls have! ;-) Good luck making a decision. Let us know what you decide and then we need to see pictures!

ETA: Nancy your style looks great on you too! Also, I have seen Oiudad products on line. Do you curly heads really recommend them? There quite expensive, right?
