The Wave

Has anyone tried this? My gym just got a couple & I'm assuming since they made the investment it's a gym quality machine (but then, you know what they say about assuming.........). It's some weird hybrid of the stairmaster & the elliptical. I'm interested in input. I might just try it this w/e but I hate wasting precious time if the workout isn't worth it.

I'd never heard of it until your post. I just googled it and it looks weird.....

Give it a try at the gym when you have time and let me know what it's like!

ETA: Apparently when I googled it, I clicked on the wrong one! There are TWO Waves. haha. I don't think it looks weird anymore, actually it kind of looks great!

Here are the two links I found. The first one is the "weird one" the second is the one I think you're talking about:

Hi Laura-

At the gym I go to, we have the same thing as what you are calling "The Wave", but ours is a product from Cybex called "The Arc Trainer."

I do cardio on it all of the time, and they are absolutely fabulous!( In fact just did it a few hours ago.)

Basically, the movement feels kind of like an elliptical but with a much more elongated stride, more up and down as opposed to back and forth. It feels kind of weird at first, but it totally works your hamstrings and glutes. I swear my butt is sitting higher than it ever has now that I incorporate it into my regimen.

IMHO, it beats the stairmaster and elliptical hands down.

Try it out and let me know your thoughts. I'll curious to hear what you think.

Take care, Lynn M.

I've tried that first wave machine at a branch of Fitness First over the summer. The rapid vibrations gave a really odd sensation at first but after I got used to it, it was really cool. There are a series of great stretches that you can do with it. You can adjust the intensity of the vibrations. I got the impression it could also be used as part of a physiotherapy programme.

Lynn,
I thought it looked like the arc trainer! I've done that many times at the gym but just can't seem to get into it. It's an awkward movement (and REALLY hard!) I'm out of breath in, like, 5 minutes.

Now that you say your butt is lookin' sexy, though, I may have to give it another go.... ;)

I LOVE the arc trainer! That's what I use at my gym right now--similar to the elliptical but much more intense--I think b/c the elliptical has more of an oval movement but the arc trainer is more circular, if that makes sense.

This wave thingy is different--the pedals go sideways instead of forward. I'm not sure if this'd be the best thing for my butt since I'm seriously lacking shape on the side, but I think I'll give it a try on Sunday, just b/c I can. I'll let you know what I think, although in watching others it doesn't look as intense as the arc trainer.

Hi Allison--

I wouldn't say the "trunk" is lookin' sexy, but less offensive than before. ;0

As far as it feeling awkward, have you experimented with the range of motion? For me, I find it feels best when I put it at the highest range of motion at a heavier resistance, but that could be just freaky me.

Laura -

Yes, please give the review after you have tried, inquiring minds and all. Is the movement like a speed skater motion? (That might be interesting. )
Lynn M.

OK tried it yesterday. I would say it's more intense than the elliptical but less intense than the arc trainer or stairmaster (it might be old fashioned but that stair master still gives me a damn good workout!). I also most definitely felt it in my abductors & aductors, much more than w/traditional machines.

I might need another couple of tries on it b/c I found the side-to-side movement very awkward & it seemed to put a strain on my ankles. But it is a decent alternative when the arc trainers & stairmasters at the gym are in use.

Thanks Laura for the review.... it does sound like an interesting alternative to the other cardio equipment in the gym.

Is it kinda/sorta like a speed skating motion? Does any glute action come into play along w/ the abductor and adductors?

PS..I'm with you on the stair master.. do you do have access to the stair mill too? Those are wayy intense in my world! :)

Yuck! You and Laura are crazy! I can't do the stairmaster or stair mill for more than 5 minutes without being bored out of my mind. They're the worst piece of cardio equipment imo.
But, hey to each his own, right? ;)

Anyhoo, thanks for the review, Laura. I wish I belonged to a gym so I could try this out. Sounds cool!
