THE secret to healthy eating is ...

to get yourself a couple of guinea pigs!

I didn't put it in my check-in post last week, but while I was doing Step Jam on Saturday, my little guinea pig was lying in his cage and dying. :-tired I was so sad to see him go, but I had known he wouldn't live a long life, because, well, he was a guinea pig. He also was a strange little piggie, in that he never would eat any fresh food and I knew he would die young.

We didn't wait long and got a couple of sows from the guinea pig rescue. They are so very, very cute, and eat lots of fresh veggies. So now our refrigerator is full of fresh cantaloupe, tomatoes, kale, apples, broccoli, and carrots. Now that I have someone to help me finish off a whole head of broccoli or cantaloupe, I'm more likely to buy it.

Guinea pigs eat pretty clean, and just may encourage you to do so as well. ;-)

Bunnies make good companions also. They help you eat healthy, they help you finish your vegetables, they are super cute and sweet, and kissing them burns calories.

Hi Mogambo:

I think what you said about kissing bunnies burns calories is one of the cutest things I have ever heard. That sounded so sweet. You must have a bunny rabbit.

Iguanas help you eat healthy too - I've had mine 11 yrs now and I think she's cute but she prefers not to be kissed!

Bunnies

I volunteer at a rabbit sanctuary, where a nice woman is kind enough to rescue rabbits from the pound when people who impulsively get them for Easter or from the pet store find that they are no longer "convenient". The bunnies are so sweet and they get to dig in dirt and live in a colony as they like to do. If you put a raisin between your lips and bend down, some of them will take the raisin from your lips and you can kiss them. Of course, a lot of them like shoulder rubs and brushing and presents like clover blossoms and vegetable scraps. I love a couple of them a lot. My favorite is a 3 yr old male named Nubby.

Small & furry pet shelters

Good for you! Although cats and dogs are abandoned more often than we'd like to see, the plight of the small and furry goes unnoticed by most. And their situation is even more dire, as due to their size, they're really seen as disposable pets. I'm so glad there are places like the rabbit sanctuary, or the guinea pig rescue.
