The No Sweets Challenge - June 7, 2005

Good morning everyone!

Mattea - fruit doesn't count on the no sweets thing, so go ahead and eat as much as you want.:)

Today my boss will be bringing me a biscuit from the bakery. I want to eat it SO BAD, I'm drooling just thinking about it:( I'm going to do my best to wrap it up and put it in the freezer for July.

Debbie - I like your idea about the water challenge for July. I usually manage around 50 oz a day, but I'd like to try to squeeze in that extra 14 oz. I can't think of anything that we can give up. Anyone else have any ideas?

Shelley,
I'm so glad b/c we still have a ton of fruit left and it's going to be even hotter todayx(
Courage against the cookie, don't even open the bag, but slip it right into an oversized envelope, seal it, and put it in your desk out of sight. You're not actually going to tear open the envelope are you? Really, you are?!?! Don't you think that looks kind of, well, crazy?
(Of course sealing a cookie inside and envelope looks kind of crazy to begin with, so this may backfire:p )
I'm also on board with Debbie's water idea, it also might be nice not to cut something but to have to add it in. More positive for sure!

Hi Shelley,

Just a suggestion, but my employer does an 8-week challenge during the summer months where you are required to drink eight 8-oz glasses of water a day, eat at least five fruit/vegies, and at least two servings of dairy each day during the Challenge time. Also you must participate in at least 30 minutes of exercise three days a week with two days of resistance exercise. (this crowd has that last one down pat and then some).

Maybe we could use parts of this or the whole.

Guys, I hate to be the party pooper but 64 oz of water a day just ain't cuttin it, according to the Ms. Fit lady. I've been following her plan for a week, and the first thing she has in store for you is to up your water intake to 1 gallon a day (128 ounces). I swear, it's a good thing school's almost out because I've been running to the bathroom between classes like my pants are on fire!

You know, there is such a thing as drinking too much water, which can lead to water intoxication.

"However, even water intake requires moderation: recent media reports have focussed on people who have drunk too much water, which can overwhelm the kidneys and lead to swelling of the brain. Water intoxication can cause symptoms of headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion and, in extreme cases, can lead to coma and death, although this is rare. Certain drugs, including illegal ones such as ecstasy, can trigger drinking excessive amounts of water. It can also be caused by health conditions that affect water balance, such as kidney failure, liver cirrhosis, and uncontrolled diabetes. Drinking excessive amounts of water can also have a psychological cause when it is known as psychogenic polydipsia"

Some fraternity members in the US have just been charged with, I believe, involuntary manslaughter for forcing an initiate to chug water. He ended up dying. I'm not saying 128 oz is too much, but you might want to check into that.

Wow, Sarah, my pants are on fire with only 64*!! AMAZING! I think we should all drink 64 and YOU should drink 128. How's that?? Ha!

Hmmm I am giving our next challenge some thought... I alrwady drink plenty of water, I don't over intake of salt and I dont do caffiene. So I think from what I am rading we need to keep thinking on this one. Maybe we each pick a bad habit we have and give that up for July. Like being unorganized, or smoking, or biting nails etc. Just a thought.

On the sweets thing I am doing ok but I almost had a give in moment last night when I was stressing on an employee who hadn't checked in for the day. SHe finally did and that craving passed. Weird what stress will do!

I think 128 oz of anything at one time is too much! But, spaced out over the entire day, 128 oz is very doable. I teach 4 classes that last 95 minutes each. I just drink one 1 liter bottle per class and that's my gallon. I DO have trouble getting it in on weekends though, just because I prefer Diet Pepsi!

I'm definitely addicted to drinking stuff, whether it be water or Diet Pepsi! It's a good thing that I don't touch alcohol cause I'd be an alcoholic for sure! If I didn't drink 4 liters of water a day, I'd drink a 12 pack of Diet Pepsi. That sounds absolutely horrible, but I've done it before!

I had a reprieve! The boss came in today with no paper bag from the bakery, and told me that the scones weren't out of the oven when he was there! In a way I'm relieved but part of me is disappointed. Ugh.

Hey guys, that is just what I was thinking about the next challenge. Because I do not drink as much as I should. That is so weird, I was telling the DH about the water. I think it would be an awesome challenge and it would be one I could do at the beach easily.

I have had 2 bran muffins this morning and my crystal light. Ran out of my orange juice, boohoo!

Hey have I said how that water challenge sounds soooooo good?

Shelley - that was a sign!! Fate stepped in for you today - the biscuit is not even there for you to resist!

There will be other biscuits, there will be other biscuits, there will be other biscuits......:p :p

Angie:)

After yesterday's discussion on PB & Banana sandwiches, i decided to have one today for lunch. YUM!:9 Still haven't had any sugar. And I actually don't even miss it. There was CAKE in the kitchen at work yesterday too.... chocolate with chocolate icing... hooray for willpower!

For future challenges, i think the water one is good. Also if we want to make it a monthly thing, there was a Clean Eating rotation posted a while back with things to focus on each week, but we could pick one per month. here is a link to it: http://69.0.137.118/dc/dcboard.php?...&topic_id=183&mesg_id=183&listing_type=search

I second Terri's July challenge suggestion to give up a bad habit. I was reading these posts and biting my nails and her post stopped me short. :p I've quit and restarted biting about a million times, I'd like to really quit once and for all.

Thanks, Terri! :)

I've been doing something like that all year. Different small changes to my diet each month. So far:

January - gave up pop
February - gave up red meat
March - gave up ice cream
April - gave up candy and chocolate
May - gave up pizza
June - gave up specialty coffe drinks (Starbucks, etc) and sugar

I'm eating so much cleaner now and never feel deprived. I feel so much healthier and I've lost 7 pounds! I think slow and steady changes is the way to go...

Wow Angie, you are a woman with a mission-all planned out I might add.

I drink at least 100 oz of water every day so adding a few more would not be difficult for me. I always start my day with 32 oz of water that I drink during my morning workout. I also drink another 32 oz before I go to bed at night. The rest I drink throughout the day at work and during/after an afternoon workout.

We can all add a little more water intake each day.

LOL! Debbie - that was definitely my hardest month! My boyfriend says I "cheated" by eating a calzone but I told him that just because it's made with the same INGREDIENTS as pizza doesn't make it pizza - it's still a CALZONE!! LOL!! I only had it once, though!!

Now I don't really crave it that much. I had pizza June 1st and have had plenty of opportunity to have it since then but chose not to. Of course, it's a couple weeks till PMS hits!!! Then LOOK OUT DOMINOS!!

:9 :9 :9 :9 :9

Another good day here. I have fudge from a great fudge shop that someone gave me. My daughter took a taste (and I ALMOST licked the knife!), and now it is going in the freezer until June.

Day 7 and we are all doing so well that we are ready for the next challenge!

Way to go on the fudge!! I brought back a piece of chocolate cake for a co-worker when I went back to the cafeteria for some fruit. I was afraid to even look at it for fear the calories would leap into my retina and plant themselves on my hips.
