The endless search for natural looking makeup...

After using Bare Escentuals since December 2003 I decided to go back to an old favorite. Ever since I started using Bare Escentuals my skin breaks out for no reason at all. I never thought it could be the makeup and then again that's the only thing that I changed about my skin regimen. My dermatologist told me that the fact that a brand of makeup looks natural and it is mineral based it is not a guarantee against skin reactions. It might not react on some types of skin but it reacted with mine. Anyway I bought Clinique again. The lady at the counter tried a couple of tones of powder foundation until we found one that disappeared with my skin. I also bought shimmery loose powder to use on top of the foundation. My skin looks completely natural now and I know my skin doesn't react to Clinique makeup so I'm happy. For the curious, I bought Superbalanced Compact Makeup in Cream and Gentle Light Loose Powder in Glow 2.

So what are you ladies using at the moment?

Edited to add (after I saw Maximus' reply): I also stopped at the Prescriptives counter because years ago when I used liquid foundation I bought Prescriptives, but they told me they have no powder foundation at the moment. Interesting enough they have a liquid powder LOL. I'll have to check that out some other time.

I use Clinique also. And for powder I use Prescriptives Magic. The stuff is so cool--I don't know how they do it, but it's kind of moist & feels really nice. I wear it often without any foundation at all.

I also use Clinique, but my foundation isn't working for me right now. I will be stopping by the Clinique counter for new foundation and the Prescriptives counter for some 'Magic'...and boy do I need some Magic lately!

Thanks ladies...

Tammy

I used to use Clinique, but was never able to find a foundation to match my skin - everything was either too pink or too orange. So, I've been using Mineral Essence and I just love it. Similar to Bare Escentuals in that it's a mineral based makeup (made by the same company, actually), but the formulations are different. Finally I have a foundation that matches my skin. And I haven't had any breakouts since I started using it - love it! :)

I use Origins Nude and Improved. It's kind of like a tinted moisterizer but it's not at all greasy, I love it. I've even converted two friends who swore by Clinique. I break out from just about every makeup except for this stuff.

I mainly use Bare Escentuals, but recently was introduced to Aromaleigh's mineral makeup and the quality is very good and it is a little less expensive than BE. I've also heard people that can't wear BE say that they can wear Aromaleigh. The website sells samples also. It is a small company, but they have a large selection. www.aromaleigh.com

Good luck with your search. I know I could NEVER go back to any other kind of makeup. I'm surprised you had problems with BE....as it usually clears blemishes up on my face. I have been known to dab a bit on a zit over night to heal it up faster.

I will keep using BE's eyeshadows and eye glimmers because I love them, but not the foundation and mineral veil. I have heard about other people breaking up with BE and I've also heard about people using bisque on their blemishes overnight with great results. Unfortunately that was not my experience. I also bought the new BE liner sealer that makes the liner shadows waterproof which was my main problem with BE's liner shadows (I loved the colors but with the humidity over here in a matter of hours the liner was all over my lids) so now I'm going to have fun with their liner shadows and shadows too. Basically I will keep using their eye makeup, but not the basic makeup because it makes me break out.

I tried BE but it made me itch. I started getting some breakouts on my chin after I started working out a lot. I am using Estee Lauder foundation now (infrequently)and Origins skin care. I like the way Origins makes my skin feel (very soft), but it doesn't seem to help with breakouts and the moisturizer I use with the SPF makes me break out. I have been thinking about trying Clinique after my current lot is gone. Thanks for the recommendations.

I love Clinique too, but I found a makeup that is just as good as Clinique. It's Almay, Skin Stays Clean liquid makeup. It feels great, doesn't turn orange, and feels just as good as Clinique. I am devoted, and the price is right. :)

The people that have broken out from Bare Escentuals, should really try Aromaleigh Mineral makeup. There is an ingredient in BE that Aromaleigh doesn't have and many people who can't wear BE, wear Aromaleigh. I, personally, know a lot of people that have had good results with Aromaleigh. They also sell sample sizes on their website, so you can try it with basically no obligation. www.Aromaleigh.com The site explains the ingredients, etc.

Hi Rose,

Great thread! My break-out-of-the-200s reward is (or now perhaps I should say WAS) Bare Escentuals make-up. I'm so glad you posted this info- and so thankful for all the insight and opinion from everyone. I love hearing about other women's experiences with foundations! I'm not a make-up everyday girl, but I think it's fun to "dress up" sometimes.

I'm wondering if people who have trouble with BE tend to oily or combination skin. My skin tends to get a bit oily in the T section, but I don't have dryness anywhere. I don't think that's techinically combination. LOL

Anyway, I thought if the people who had trouble with BE had skin similar to mine that I might think about choosing a new kind of make-up for my reward....

Rose--the liquid powder is the Magic I think--it's the strangest thing in the world--it's powder that feels wet. I really don't know how they do it. Magic I guess LOL.

For the oily skinned peeps....I know BE sells something called Mineral Veil....just a side note. It helps with controlling oil. I'm not sure if Aromaleigh has something similar, as my skin is like the Sahara.

lorajc, I read your first response about Aromaleigh yesterday and immediately went and ordered about a dozen samples. The colors are just gorgeous! :) Thanks for telling us about Aromaleigh!

My dermatologist doesn't buy into the "you get what you pay for" thing. He recommends brands you can get at your local CVS or equivalent. Right now I am using Neutrogena SkinClearing Clean Tint, a tinted moisturizer with salicylic acid. It seems fine although it doesn't have any SPF so I have to make sure I put some on underneath. It evens out my skin which is all I want because I don't like the way most makeup feels on my face.

Maximus I did a search. There's Deep Magic Liquid Face Powder and Magic Cream Potion Compact. Which one do you use? I have to say that both of those products are apparently among the favorites with Hollywood make up artists.

I don't know which one of the BE products made me break out if it was the foundation or the mineral veil. I bought the BE brushes too and the spray to clean the brushes. I cleaned them before I went to bed every single night and I still had breakouts. With BE if you don't get any reactions and if you can afford it then go ahead. I love the way my skin looks with BE and like I said I'll keep using the eye makeup but not the rest of the make up. If you compare Clinique's cost to BE's the difference is considerable. A container of mineral veil has .47 oz and it costs $19 (+ S&H if you get it online) and Clinique's Blended Face Powder and Brush has 1.2 oz (a little bit more than double the amount of mineral veil) and costs about $17.50. A container of BE's clear radiance has 0.03 oz and costs $18 (+ S&H if you get it online) and Clinique's Gentle Light Powder (which I use exactly like I used Clear Radiance) has .95 oz (a lot more than clear radiance) and costs about $21. The superbalanced makeup I bought costs about $27 the first time but then you can get the refills that cost about $20 with BE you pay about $28 for the foundation every time. So as you can see there is a difference.

Today is my second day using superbalanced foundation, blended powder on top and a little bit of gentle light on my forehead, cheeks, neck and decolleté. I love that superbalanced. I don't need anything else except maybe mascara and lip gloss. I look pretty healthy too and not made up. I'm sold. (Although I'm eyeing that magic liquid powder haha). It is so hard to look natural with makeup, that's why my search will never end.

Hi Connie. I think your type of skin is classified as normal to oily (oily in some areas and normal elsewhere). Mine is combination (oily on the Tzone, dry around the eyes, some areas around the mouth and the neck). I hope this helps.

It's the liquid face powder. I adore that stuff! The only problem I have is it only comes in two shades--light & dark. I always buy both & mix them.

I just ordered $20 worth of samples myself plus they are sending me 3 samples of eye shadows with my sample order and I got to choose the colors I wanted. The matte makeup sounds good. I currently use BE and thought I would never think about changing but....the samples are just too good to resist. I love playing around with new makeup colors! Thanks for the info.!
