Tell me about the south

autumn

Cathlete
Ok sounthern Catheites, especially Texas! I need to know a little more about your great states. My DH and I have been discussing a relocation for YEARS!!! I don't like the midwest winters!. x(
Anyway, in light of recent events and the relocation of my crazy, lovable, favorite cousin to Dallas, I would like to be closer to my family and warmer. DH needs green (eliminates the southwest). I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the mountains but Texas doesn't offer much in the way of mountains. BUT, I realize Texas is huge, so how about hilly country?

My other consideration is NC, we have a really good friend there. But, that is so far from Texas. Oh what to do?

So tell me about your state? PLEASE! I must convince DH!! ;-)

Autumn, how nice of you to ask. I am proud to be from Texas, been here all my life. I will only tell you a few things, since I am very biased. I will ask my DH tomorrow, what he thinks, since he moved here from Florida, with the intention of moving to California. Somehow, he never made it there. Mind you, he can get a job anywhere, he's a pharmacist. As could I, get a job anywhere that is.

You being a nurse practitioner could find countless possibilities, but, that's not anything you already don't know.

Well, I have to start with the food. It's delicious. The best, & I don't turn anything down! Especially Tex-Mex. You have the ocean not more than 8 hours away. A major port city, Houston, within driving distance. (Think shopping.) Dallas has 2 Sephora's but will soon open another! Pardon me. I digress.

I have always been told by visitors that the South is much more warm & friendly. I personally have even had tourists from Britain, fawn over my accent. I know that may seem silly, but I don't mind sounding like a hick. When it comes the time, I can be as eloquent & precise as I need to be. The reality is, most of us don't take such things too seriously.

The weather, surely you know, changes from day to day if not minute to minute. Please keep warm weather & cool weather clothes out at all times during the year. But when it's hot, it's HOT!

I'm not sure, what you really want to know, other than if there are mountains. I do believe it's more mountainous in the west part of Texas, but then you're giving up green. Maybe it's easier for you to state what are top needs for you & your family & then see if Texas would be a fit.

Autumn, you sound like a bright, proper, vivacious lady, & we'd love to have you & your family.

Marla.}(

Autumn - I have no idea about Texas, but I just wanted to say hi and that I hope you're doing okay:) I'd love to hear from you!

I love living nestled between the Shenandoah Mountains. Nothing else like it. I feel like where I live is like the Garden of Eden. I have two streams off our country gravel road, and if we have the windows open at night, we can hear the stream...soooo relaxing! I live in Page County where you hear the bobcat crying out in the fall, if you listen closely. This time of the year if I leave the windows open I can smell the wild roses and honeysuckles, and it is so peaceful. In fact, there is much wildlife here including the Black Bear. People are very simple and warm here...just like the summer weather. The mountains are spectacular to look at and much more to do if you go up to visit Skyline Drive with so many trails to hike in which you will find many breathtaking waterfalls to view.
The bad part is that this is God's Country out here and you won't find any malls nearby. You will have to travel 45 mins- 1 hour to get to one. Good part is that you can live somewhere spaced very far apart from your neighbor and enjoy those grand views of the pretty mountains. I love the privacy that gives me as we live on 1 1/2 acres.
You can check out my pics too. I have a picture of our backyard in there too.

Good Luck with your adventures.

Charlotte~~

I used to live in New Mexico and yes there are grass in the northern part of NM. The more south you go, the more brown/bland it is. I used to live in the mountains in NM. It was GORGEOUS! I also used to live in Charlottesville, Va and it's GORGEOUS, too. You can see the mountains and all. It's a college town which I don't know if you'd like it. I've never been to Texas. If I had to pick a state to move to, it sure will be Virginia. DH and I regretted moving out of there. It was all Dh's idea to move. A stupid idea that one was.

I still have to email ya back. I'm sorry about that. I've been sick with a bad cold for the past 2 days now.

OOOh, Charlotte, are you in need of a long-lost sister? How about a roommate? Sounds absolutely beautiful. Anyway, who needs a mall when you can shop online?

Ah Texas! Love to talk about this subject. No mountains, but the hill country is in the Austin area. Very lovely. East texas in the Tyler/Jacksonville area is VERY hilly. and green. i used to live in Tyler. It is beautiful!!!! Now i live on the coast. on the coast, there really arent's defined seasons as much as there are in the East Texas area. Here it is humid and we typically get 3 real cold fronts in the "Winter" The rest of the time, it is either cool or HOT! You get used to it. The food is fabulous like Marla mentioned. The politics are interesting, but i try to stay out of all that. There is pleanty of green, tons of people, lots to do and see, and you'll deffinately get some heat! Come on down!

Marla, thank you for answering! I should have mentioned I lived in the Dallas area when in the early 80s for 1 ½ years, and I was attended the WHCPN program at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas in 97. I don’t remember much from the early 80s, but my experience in ’97 was great. I remember GREAT FOOD and GREAT SHOPPING! :) The people were sooooo friendly; my area of MO is cliquish and not welcoming. I am not sure if the winters are mild enough for me though. I am about 11-12 hours from Dallas now, so that nothing on a plane. I would just like to be a little closer (driving) to my cousin.

Shelley, you are so sweet to check in on me.

Charlotte, I will be packing a tent and moving in behind you. It is breathtaking!!! My DH has seen your part of the country frequently for business. He told me it was gorgeous. We have been through the Smokies and I was ready to move. I LOVE the mountains. I lived the first 10 years of my life in the California mountains… though they were a little bear. :) We also lived in Colorado, and I was a mountain snob. DH and I were sure we would not be impressed with the Smokies… we were humbled!

Lisa, thanks for the info. I have been through NM, and it is beautiful. I honestly find beauty in MOST places, but I have spent over 20 years surrounded by green rolling hills. I do want milder weather, but I am not sure how much I will sacrifice to get it. I also would like to be within a reasonable distance from my family. I certainly know how blessed I am to have my family, though it is small. I really want Sydney and Jordan to have that sense of family especially during times like this. We do have a friend in VA (from NC) that is family; she flies in every 3-4 months. She flew in for Jordan’s baptism the beginning of April and again for my mother’s funeral last week. She is a treasure! DH family is here, but other than his parents we don’t’ spend much time with them. But, you know how I can be. :) Hope you feel better soon. Email me when you get to feelin’ better.

Jes, Austin is one of the locations we have been discussing over the last year. It may be my perfect place. I think we need to visit. My BIL was in Dallas for a couple of years, and he told us we would love San Antonio. “3 real cold fronts in the "Winter", oh that sounds like heaven. I am just not meant to live in the cold.

My goodness, I am chatty this PM. Thank you everyone for the info, you answered my questions. I’ll be visiting soon.
