"teaching" a class

a friend of mine has a cousin who recently opened up her own dance studio. i took a "move to lose" dance class with her last night, and she asked if i would consider helping her out if she ever couldn't lead the class. does anyone know if i would be "allowed" to do this without any type of certification? i wouldn't be creating the class, and it's dance/cardio, so it's not really a question of people's form being correct. it would just be me leading the class and cueing the moves.

RE:

It's up to the owner of the studio/gym to decide whether or not they want you to teach without a certification. It's a difficult thing to do though--it takes a lot of practice to learn how to lead a fitness class. If you do decide to do it, have fun!

RE:

It's up to the gym/studio. You want to be careful and check your state's law. If you aren't certified and someone is injured, they could consider it negligence that you are teaching without a certification.

RE:

I have been teaching cardio/sculpt classes at a dance studio since January and only just got certified as Personal Fitness Trainer last week ( not in group fitness yet). The dance studio where I work can hire anyone as long as my classes are covered by the insurance of the studio. So, instead of renting the studio, we split the profits and I am covered under the studio's liability. I would just make it clear that the person you are subbing for is covered by the studio and not by her own policy, because then it could mean trouble for her if someone should be hurt. None of the dance teachers where I work are certified either. It's up to the discretion of the studio. But here in NY you don't have to be certified, not sure about other states though.
