Swollen face, Please help!

My son had a cavity in a back tooth, and the dentist assured him that the pain he was feeling was due to the nerve dying and that he would be fine. For the time being, she did not fill it. He had tooth pain last night, though it wasn't as bad as it had been a few weeks ago. He awoke this morning with half of his face swollen and a completely different face. I'm just waiting to call the dentist. I've never heard of child abscesses, and I've never had one myself, so I'm not sure what causes them. Do they simply give him antibiotics or do they need to extract the tooth? Could you please tell me about your experience?

Hi, Please, first and foremost, treat toothache as a dental emergency. You should not ignore a toothache, especially if he is in pain and has a puffy face. That is not a good sign in the least. An abscess can affect anyone at any age; there is no such thing as an abscess age limit. As this appears to be a serious situation, you should seek a second opinion. A toothache, if left untreated, can be fatal, causing damage to many parts of the body.

Thank you for responding. I'm not going to wait any longer and will make an appointment with an emergency dentist right away. My son's dental health concerns me. I'll provide an update soon after the visit.

I hope your son is okay now. As for the dentist saying that the nerve will die and didn’t do anything is ridiculous. You should stop going to this dentist immediately.

I know when the tooth is like this it needs to be pulled out or needs a root canal. Even if the nerve is dying and the dentist doesn’t do anything there could be a problem. If the nerve is dying sounds like the tooth is really bad cavity. A normal tooth’s nerve just doesn’t die.

If I were you never go to that dentist again. Sounds like she is really lazy and didn’t want to deal with your son.
