Sushi!!

I am officially in love with sushi! My 12 year old and I have been going out for lunch at least once a week (he has an odd palate - won't eat pb and j or pizza, but will eat raw fish:)) It is so tasty, light and refreshing!

Anyone ever make their own? Amazon has a sushi kit on sale that has some positive reviews, but don't know if I could pull it off or not.

I love sushi so much I could eat it every day!!! Wouldn't try to make it myself but I suppose if you have a reliable fish monger, could be done rather easily. Enjoy!!

Yummm....I was really getting into sushi just as my visit to Toronto was ending. I'm wondering though does anyone know things about its nutritional value (cholesterol and/or calorie content). I just thought one can't go wrong with a raw fish delicacy, right!? But a friend of mine says for example she avoids the rolls because of the fake crab meat and sugar that's put in the rice. Is it true?

I have read that some sushi can contain high doses of mercury. Some celebrity last year supposedly developed mercury poisoning because he loved sushi so much he had eaten it almost daily for quite awhile. (However there was speculation that he actually was hospitalized for drug problems and that was just a cover story...)

I did a quick google and here's a link telling more. http://www.jsonline.com/news/29548599.html

But from a nutritional pov, it seems like you can't go wrong - pure protein and a tiny amount of carbs, what's not to like? And it's SOOOO fun to order all the different rolls and see what comes out of the kitchen. Also LOVE the wasabi!

I LOVE me some sushi!!! Just whatever you do don't watch the tv show "Monsters Inside Me."
And yes the fake sushi "americanized" rolls tend to have a lot of mayo.

It all depends one what type of roll you get. Hands down a Tuna roll is going to win over a Seattle roll (smoked salmon and cream cheese) nutritionally. Pick the rolls that have good stuff inside and no sauces or cheeses and you're golden. My personal two favorites are spicy tuna with avocado roll and the cucumber with (or without) avocado roll. I've discovered a whole new love of avocado which i pretty much don't touch unless it is with tuna!.

I haven't attempted to make sushi at home yet but I have watch some tutorials. It's sooo easy! However, making the sushi rice can take some time so you need to do it ahead. It's not hard, but you are supposed to let it cool to room temperature NOT in refrigerator. All you really need is one of those bamboo mats with cellophane for rolling the roll up (without sticking). I keep meaning to try this one of these days...

Thanks for the link, Diane. Also helpful is that they've provided a list to the left of the page showing the types of sushi which are lower in mercury/better choice. All good stuff to know next time I grab (or rather attempt to grab!) the chopsticks ;)

P.S. Yep, the wasabi kicks it evey time

Ahoy there, Shelby #2!! Didn't even realize I had a namesake on the forums. (I also have a male cousin named Shelby...)

I've always been fond of avocado and enjoy avocado rolls too. Don't have either the nerve or skills even think about making sushi on my own yet. However, when you've got the hang of it I'll expect my Japanese-style dinner invitation in the mail :p

love, love, love sushi!!

sushi is sooooooooooooooo good!!
unfortunately, i haven't found a super awesome sushi restaurant since leaving the northeast (yooki yama, branford, ct, yum, yum, yum!), but that still hasn't stopped me from trying every sushi place in my vicinity. :)
i always feel like i can eat as much sushi as i want b/c (for the most part), it's just so good for you...and so light!!
i'm kinda mad i cooked tonight...i'd rather go get sushi now! :)

Sushi's definitely an acquired taste. I HATE IT!!! I've tried it several times, and I've had to spit it out into my napkin just to avoid hurling right there on the plate!! I wish I liked it though, it's low cal and pretty healthy from what I can tell.
