Surprise pregnancy - ? about folic acid (folate)

megs

Cathlete
I got a little surprise last weekend when I discovered I was pregnant (my youngest is 14!). I was initially in shock but am now very excited about our miracle pregnancy. I wonder if anybody is aware if flaxseeds contain folic acid - I am now taking a folate supplement but have taken 2 tablespoons of flaxseeds per day for about a year. Any info or advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Meg

Congratulations that's so exciting!!!! I wish I could help you regarding the flaxseeds. All I know is that it's great your taking these - keep it up. I know they are high in Omega 3 and other good fatty acids and they will help considerably with the constipation problem that sometimes occurs while taking iron for pregnancy. I would recommend that you take a folic acid vitamin - they are cheap and tiny and didn't seem to upset my stomach as other vitamins did. I'm still throwing up my vitamins sometimes at night and I'm in my sixth month of pregnancy. Hope your feeling great!!

Thanks for the info Briee - I will try and keep taking the flax. I am feeling fantastic at the moment, a little nauseous from time to time but generally I feel all warm and fuzzy - very relaxed and calm.
All the best, Meg

Congratulations!!
As far as folic acid goes, it's in so many foods we eat that you'll probably be fine. If you check labels, it's sometimes listed as "folate". It's in cereals, power bars, breakfast drinks, lots of stuff. If you ate any of those foods, you'll be fine. However, you should start taking a prenatal vitamin now.

How wonderful! My "baby" was 12 when my youngest was born. She is now 2. She is a delight. A complete and utter joy! I wish you well. Get lots of rest. Those last couple of months are a little more difficult than they were in our 20's. God Bless!

Hopefull;-)

Hello Meg,
It is good to see that I am not in this alone. My youngest will be 14 when my baby will be born. I can't help you with the flax seed. I just wanted to say "Hi" and congratulations. I was very shocked also and am still a little scared since I am 41 but am getting more excited every day.

God bless you,
Joyce

I looked up nutrition facts for flax seed and it looks as though it does contain some folate but not in the form of folic acid. About 8% of your daily value in a tablespoon flaxseed.

About 7 years ago or so in the US, manufacturers were required to add folate to flour so most baked products you purchase will have folic acid. Just depends on what you eat.

Good luck with your pregnancy!

And Joyce, I'm 40 and pregnant with my first. Due in December.

Wow - I can't help with the Flax questions either but I fit in with the rest of you in that I'm 40 and PG with my first (after being told I was infertile 8 years ago!!), due 1/31/04!!

I've also got a step daughter that will be 15 in Nov so a large difference in age for DH's children!

Congrats to all on the wonderful surprises!!

I have read some stuff on the internet that says be cautious using flaxseed during pregnancy. You might want to research it before you continue with the flaxseed.
