Summertime lethargy?

Am I the only one around here who has a serious case of the Summer Zzzzzzzzzz's? The weather here in the Minnesota Twin Cities has been very hot and muggy recently, and my workout appetite, at least for land cardio, has gone right down the tubes. I'm finding myself heading to the club more and more for water workouts so that I get SOMETHING in, but the mojo isn't there nearly as much as it was even a few weeks ago.

The older I get, the more the dreaded heat/humidity combo affects me. I just can't breathe very well when the air is saturated and it's too hot to perspire effectively (the sweat NEVER evaporates), so I can't do my normal Nosebleed Mish-Moshes nearly as often.

Please tell me I'm not the only one. Maybe I'm just a lazy slob and the climate is just an excuse.

A-Jock,

Do you have adequate "fannage" in your workout room at home? For me this makes the difference between Imaxing and laying on the floor perspiring (okay, maybe that's sometimes the same two things:p ). Seriously, it's not just about overall temp. for me (i.e. air-conditioning), but I need to feel the air moving. And these fans work like nothing else I've found. Totally worth the investment.

I edited to change the link, I just googled and grabbed one of the first I saw without looking at the price. Holy expensive air mover batman.
Here's a better link to compare prices:

And no, for anyone who's wondering, I don't work for the fan people or the blender cup people. :+

I don't believe you are the only one. My grandfather used to have a saying from many moons ago that I am sure he heard from others...

"in summer the iron in your blood turns to lead in your a$$" ;-)

"Mmmwwwaaahhhaaaa!"

I think I pulled something laughing:7

Beavs, I love that and fully intend to steal it.

Beavs, that's a prize-winner!

As I write this, I'm about to head out the door for a day's worth of computer training. Despite my rant above about not having the energy to work out, the prospect of a day of sitting in front of a computer fills me with dread, and reminds me of a quote much like your grandfather's:

"The mind will absorb only what the butt will endure."

Wish me luck, people. In an hour, just Me And The Excel Spreadsheet.

A-Jock

Please ladies...steal away and enjoy that lovely little saying!

Perhaps a blah day in front of the computer will inspire Ms. Annette to get moving...and feel better ;-)

Hi A-Jock,

You're not the only one. I had been hitting the gym consistently every morning M-F for the last four months, but when the pollen (and now the heat) started to hit here in Vermont about 3 weeks ago, my butt just started to drag.

The only upside is that my food appetite is dragging too, so at least there's some balance.

Oh yeah! I find myself much more letharthic the hotter it is too, even with fans. I think the heat and humidity takes its toll quicker...mentally as well as physically...than when I was younger. I can't always push myself as hard with the intensity. Perhaps the fact that I don't spend my working day in air conditioning at all, and by the end of the day some of my zip has been well zapped by the heat.

Nope. I get it too. It's very hot here and I don't look forward to working out in the weather, because I have to do it in the evening. So...I'm trying to do as much fun cardio as I can (skating, cycling...)

Nope...you're not alone. Every summer since I graduated college, I've gained weight because of the summers ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ's. lol We stay up later than normal, days are lazy, hazy and hot. Which all turns into sleep-in mornings. I have VOWED that this summer will be different. Focussing on getting to bed by a certain hour (11pm) and concentrating on keeping the workouts going.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZ

hahahhaha...That is great...I feel the same way, too. I have surgery next week and I am actually EXCITED for an excuse NOT to work out...how sad is that??? I am so sad right now...ha

I feel the same way! In the winter I am raring and ready to go, I have more energy and my workouts seem better.
I am not a heat lover, and even though Vegas is not humid, it is 112 degrees everyday for months.}( So you are basically a prisoner in your own home, and when you do go out,it totally wipes you out. If it was humid too, oh dear that would be awful!

Someone please remind me why I live here??

I'm with you AJock!! And living in NYC makes it even worse. Imagine your hot and humid, but then being crammed into a confined island with 8 million of your closest friends, their dogs, their cars, the truck, the cabs and then the heat is trapped and radiated by all of the tall buildings. Then, you can "escape" by going into the uncooled subways and get crammed in there like sardines (and hope your subway car has fully functioning AC). The subways are like hot boxes. Summer here is absolutely disgusting. By the time I get home I'm so exhausted and clammy feeling that more sweating is the last thing on my mind. It's a problem, because I need to be working out more, not less. Only 2.5 months to go, at least.

You are not alone! I feel the exact same way! The only problem is my appetite has not changed, if anything I want to eat more. That is not a good combination! Hang in there, this too shall pass! (if it's any consolation, you have eased my conscience by knowing that the mish-mosh queen runs out of energy too)

Susan

You're definitely not alone. Definitely a lot of lead in my @ss. I'd like to take a nap right now, if nobody minds... zzzzZZZZZzzzZZZZ...
