Summer produce

I feel like we go from famine to feast when summer comes. All of sudden, my refrigerator is filled with sweet melons and fabulous veggies. I had a bunch of seedless red grapes the other day that cost about $2.99 that were probably the best fruit I've ever eaten.

It's so easy to keep my DH healthy during the summer by just keeping cut-up melons in the fridge. He's not even interested in cookies and candy when there's cut-up melon around. I can't wait for the great blueberries and tomatoes I know will be coming soon (thank you, New Jersey!)

For anyone who is even thinking about eating cleaner, this is the time! The world is now a veritable festival of produce. How I wish it could be this way all year round.

How true Nancy. I just love summertime and the fresh produce. DH goes to a farmer's market most Wed. and stocks up on all kinds of good stuff. I especially love a fresh fruit salad. And I can't wait for corn on the cob.

Strawberry picking time is here for us. We went last week and picked 6 pounds of strawberries. How wonderful fresh fruit and veggies are.

Would be nice if we lived somewhere where fresh stuff was year round instead of 3 or 4 months out of the year

Hubby will eat fresh stuff but when it is gone, forget it. When we were in CA visiting relatives, I was so shocked that he ate an orange from the family orchard. I looked at him and said you don't eat oranges, he replied, when they are fresh and as good as this I will. Hmmmm, maybe we should move to CA :)

Can't wait til the farmers start to have some veggies stands. Love those fresh tomatoes, cukes, green peppers, squash/zuchinni.

sometime this month if it doesnt rain hard we are going strawberry picking. it only cost about $1 a pound for the juicest, freshest strawberries one could ever taste. i haven't looked into it but i am sure they have blackberry and blueberry picking too. they used to have tomatoe and squash but i am not sure if they are doing that anymore. i just love this time of year when all the good stuff comes out cheaper.

Agreed. I have some delish strawberries in the frig now. I'm going to the the apple orchard one day this week where in the summer we can pick fresh peaches and blueberries. They do this to stay open all year and then in September we go pick oodles of different kinds of apples....:9 And the farmer's market here is open.

I looooove summertime and it's fruits and veggies.

Oh yeah? Well, the desert must be killing everything here in Phx. So far this season 2/2 watermelons I purchased were shi**y, apparently there are no sweet potatoes to be found anywhere, and I have outright lost hope on romaine lettuce....or even a decent head of green leaf for that matter!! The only vegetable that I have purchased lately with a shread of dignity was red peppers. Oh, that and a pretty good batch of taut red grapes!

Maybe I need to go to a Farmers Market??x(

I am with you Janice....I am missing the East Coast in a big way. And Nancy's post made my eyes misty.....thoughts of New Jersey blueberries....... I did find some yummy organic strawberries at Frye's the other day....but man they were pricey!! I haven't had a chance to get to Sprout's here in Chandler in a couple of weeks......but I am so stopping there tomorrow!!

Mental note to self: don't move to Arizona.
I had no idea it was difficult to get great summer produce in Arizona.
Is that because it's so dry?
