suggestions for bad knees

I need some suggestions for my father. He desperately needs some exercise but has terrible knees. He's been bowlegged all his life and basically has no cartilage in his knees to pad against the bones. Something like that. Anyway, some days its so bad he can't even walk. Unfortunately because of this he has put on weight, which makes it all the worse. I think if he loses some of the excess weight he'll have less pressure on his knees. But what can he do? Obviously anything high impact is out. Like I said some days he cant even walk. He has no access to a pool. I'm visiting them in Aug and was thinking I'd try and come up with some sort of plan. My current thoughts are a sort of circuit with some light walking for 5 mins, strength training with bands for 5 mins, back and forth for 30 mins. I THINK he might be able to handle that. My other thought was yoga, but don't know which tape to get that would be easy on the knees. The only yoga tape I have is Karen Voights Yogascuplt which is out of the question. I really really need your help guys, he has high blood pressure and takes all kinds of pills and I Hate to see him like this. He used to be so active. He eats great, mostly only fish or beans. Looking forward to hearing what you guys have to say!

Could he handle an exercise bike? Does he live in a town with no Y or any other health clubs? Sometimes rehab places have pools and people off the street can join them. Swimming would really be the best option for a person with such bad knees.

No gym....way small town. There is a pool at the school he works at BUT 1) he gets bad ear infections even with the plugs and 2) the hours its available for lap swimming dont mesh with his work schedule. I'm working on him about that. Part of the problem is that he doesnt have the motivation. Dont know what to do about that.

You may have to work out the details with the school yourself, and tell him he can do it. He can check with a doc about the ear plugs, or with a phys ed teacher.

I was in a similar situation with a person with bad knees....I tried to talk him into joining the Y (which is 5 minutes away!) that has a big pool and an arthritis class, but he hemmed and hawed until I bought him a membership and said, "Here's your membership, the class times are such and such, GO!" It worked and he loved it, and even after knee surgery a year and a half ago, he swims faithfully 3 times a week. You dad will be amazed at how much the swimming will help.

Sometimes these stubborn guys just need a push. There IS a way! I will e-mail you with another suggestion. :7
