Substitute cardio for running????

Hey ladies -

What sort of cardio do you think compares the closest to running? I've had to quit (again), even though I was only running once a week, because each time I did, my knees bothered me and I noticed it was taking longer each time for the discomfort (sometimes pain) to go away.

So, I've decided I'd rather keep my original knees. But one thing I noticed was that the variety, mixed in with Cathe's step, etc., really kicked my endurance up. I don't want to lose that. Can anyone think of something to keep that sort of variety in my workouts?

Thanks!

Sorry about the knees, I will be starting back to running if the weather here in California every shapes up. Last year I started running in the summer, but only once a week and found I did okay if I didn't push the pace to much but just kept it steady, with smaller strides. I did experience some soreness and quit running. We'll see how it is when I start back up again.

Anyway, I like hi-lo, but only low to medium impact. I enjoy MIC, but usually switch to something else during the high impact parts. I try to do the hi-lo from my Timesaver DVD too. Can't remember if CTX has hi-lo or not. Hi-lo for me kind of simulates the steadiness of running and is a nice break from step.

HTH.

Hi Shannon,

Do you have access to an elliptical machine? I recently started using one in a gym with some of the Cardio Coach workouts and found that I could really get the intensity up there without dealing with the impact.

It's not just me who says so...Runners World says it, too! I had to take 7 weeks off for a stress fracture and the elliptical was my weapon of choice. I was able to return to running with very little "adjustment time" after my injury was healed up enough to do impact activity.

Hi Ladies - thanks for the advice. Elliptical had crossed my mind, but I don't have access to one. I suppose I could buy one... But where in the heck would I put it? I could get rid of my chair. I don't need to sit, do I?

Get rid of the chair and get a spinning bike! Then you can sit and workout! Actually, seriously, I got my spinning bike because I am down to only being able to run once in a while and spinning for me is as close as you can get to running (and then some!).
