Strength/Endurance workouts recovery HELP please

Please share your opinions of what is the best way to fuel your body after strength and/or endurance weight work. I have read that the sugar/carb protein mix of 4:1 is best; then I read that sugar/carb recovery drinks are great for men but not for women - that we should have juice/protein because the insulin rush of sugar carbs promotes fat storage (aahh!!) in women. I am a whole foods kind of person and would rather eat egg whites/whole grain cereal with milk, strawberries, raisons (sp?) and a banana after a workout but have also read, (I really need to stop reading), that whole food nutrition takes too long to get to your muscles and therefore you will not get optimal results from your work. If you have found something that works - please share it with me.
 
I use a 4:1 carb/protein after intense/long workouts. I drink a recovery shake. I also eat. I almost always grab oatmeal with a banana (cut up and tossed in the oatmeal) with a side of 3 egg whites.

This works great for me!
