Strange dogs in my yard (kind of long)

I am so freaked out right now. Early this morning at about 3 a.m. my dogs started going nuts. They woke me up and wanted to go outside. They wouldn't let up. I figured they saw a possum or something, so I let them out. I am very groggy as it is the middle of night. Then I hear what sounds like dogs fighting, but they don't sound like my dogs. I look outside and on my patio a pit bull is fighting with my little dog. Upon a closer look I notice two dogs in my back yard, one has a leash hanging off of his collar. My dog is getting the crap beat out of him. My yard is fenced in -- so someone came in the night and put their dogs in my back yard while I slept. Freaky! The dogs stopped fighting for a minute and I was able to call my two dogs in.

I called the police and they said I would have to call animal control when they open at 8 a.m. Meanwhile my dogs are going nuts. They are scratching on the doors and crying to get back out. I turn all the flood lights on so my yard is lit up. I just sat up trying to keep my dogs from scratching up the door. Around 7 a.m. I decided to take my dogs out in the front yard on a leash to go to the bathroom -- well the two dogs in my backyard are now gone! Whoever dropped them off apparently came back for them! This is just too weird. We are going to put a lock on our gate -- which happens to be directly outside of our bedroom window. I feel very confused. Do you think I should file a police report?

1st off I just can not believe somebody had the audacity to use your back yard property as a holding pen for their dogs overnight.

What an invasion of privacy! If it were me I'd be pretty peeved about it as well and concerned.

I would call the police and ask their opinion about filing a report.

In the meantime putting a lock on your gate would be a good idea.

That is so strange. I hope your dogs are ok. I would make sure and walk your fence line and make sure there is no place that the dogs could have gotten in by digging or squeezing through gaps in the fence. I would also call animal control and let them know what happen in case there have been similar cases.

Could the dogs have gotten in by themselves? And then maybe the owner realized they were missing and retrieved them?

Although I do think the whole thing is so weird. I'd be pretty freaked out, I think.

I second Jean on checking out your fence. You would be surprised what dogs can squeeze through. When I was younger, my dog Toby was attacked by 2 German Shepherds who squeezed UNDER our fence. We still do not know how they did it, but my dad saw them and said it was the weirdest thing. They did a number on my poor dog and we had to rush him to the emergency vet to have his neck stiched up. Hopefully, they will not come back! I'm glad none of your dogs were seriously injured!

I guess I'd have to go with the theory that they got in themselves somehow, mostly because I have a hard time comprehending that someone would put them in there. But people frequently surprise me on the things they'll do.

Definitely, if you don't find anyplace they could have entered themselves, I'd file a report. Just so it's on record. The cops most likely won't be able to do anything.

You should install motion detecting lights in your yard too.

Good idea. When I get home I will walk around my fence line and make sure there are not any new holes. It's so strange that two dogs were in the yard and one had a leash hanging off.

Was it a leash or a chain? Could be that he was tied up and broke away. We had a dog hanging out at our house for a day because she broke off her leash and wandered into our yard. She was a nice dog, so I took care of her for the day and let her play with our dog until we could find her family. We're on a very busy road. The dog didn't want to go home when her Man found her. Guess she had fun.

Anyway...good luck!

Many dogs can jump and/or climb up to 6 ft. fences no problem. Pit bulls are good climbers and are known to do so (and therefore for that reason and so many others, if people own pit bulls they should be EXTRA CAREFUL - mine are NEVER left outside when I'm not home and not able to watch them "just in case" even though they are complete sweethearts and couldn't climb their way out of a box). But I used to have a black lab that could easily clear our 6 ft. brick wall every single day after we'd leave for work. My neighbors would watch her do it. And she'd come home just before we would. Luckily my neighbors finally told us about it so that we started keeping her in the house when we went to work even though she had an oasis in the yard.

I'm glad your dogs are okay.

Wow that's scary!! It all goes back to owners being responsible for ther dogs though. Those dogs should not have been in your back yard period and someone is responsible. I would comb the neighborhood to see if you can find them again and either discuss this with the owner or report it to animal control. I am sure you were terrified for your dogs. I am so glad they weren't hurt.
