Step dvds that are too fast

I love dancy step classes and dvds and have been doing step classes ever since step was invented. But I can no longer keep up and would love a slower beats-per-minute option. For example, I tried Shock Cardio Step Moves this morning and found it way too fast to keep up. So please offer your collective wisdom and experience-
1. Is there a dvd player that lets you can slow the speed down, like the cd players that aerobic instructors use? Is it affordable?
2. If you shorten the range of motion alot, taking very short strides on each move, will that hurt your body after a while? It interferes with that flowing, dancy feeling-alot.
3. Has anyone gotten used to doing step dvds without using the step? I tried it this morning with Step Moves, but it feels weird. Maybe it takes time to get used to.

Right now I shorten the moves a little and just get behind, then skip a few moves to get back with what the instructor is doing. As I get used to a dvd, I get a little faster. Is that about the only option? It's so frustrating!

Thanks for your advice-Robin

I haven't tried this, but there is something called a "Mat Step" (or step mat? I think it's the former) that is a black mat with a non-slip grip on the back, that's the size of the top of a step. It's used to do step moves on the floor. Having the size and shape of a step might make it feel a bit less weird than just doing the moves on the floor.

I have previewed, but not yet tried, the new step workouts, but I remember doing BodyMax (the original) after not having done it for a while, and it was amazing how fast it was (even compared to most of Cathe's other step workouts).
