Step aerobics and running

From skimming through the posts, I see that many of you cross train with step aerobics and running.
How do you combine both activities safely and effectively?
I used to alternate running 4-6 miles one day with videos such as Power Max, Step Fit, and Interval Max the next day. I overtrained and wound up with plantar fasciitis.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Adrienne

I think the main thing to keep in mind is that you should alternate hard days with easy days. For example, if you run hard one day, don't do Interval Max the next. Instead, try a easier, possibly low impact workout for your cardio. Or, if your cardio is particularly grueling one day, maybe just lift the next. I ran about 7 miles today so tomorrow I will do PS legs and maybe 30 minutes of really low impact aerobics. Then the next day, I might do a hard step tape like Interval Max etc.

These are just a few ideas from what I have been able to pick up on this forum. Hope it helps.

Cross Training

I think ideally, we need to cross train weight training with different forms of aerobic exercise. The reason I like to vary the types of aerobics I do is that I have arthritis, so varying the impact and intensity of a workout is essential to me. I step, run/walk, and kickbox, alternating the intensity regularly. This keeps me from overtraining and keeps me from getting bored!
