Steel v. Rolled Oats

Okay, someone please tell me the difference between steel oats and rolled oats. I'm working on changing over to clean eating and I have seen both, but can't really tell what the difference is.

Anyone?

It's probably something right in front of my face, but I'm just missing it!

Hi-

I believe the difference is how the whole oat grain is cut... Rolled Oats are "flaked" and steel cut is kind of pulverized into little "grape nut" like looking particles. Rolled oats are also slightly steamed during manufacture so that they cook faster than steel cut.
Nutritionally, old fashioned rolled oats are the same as steel cut... its more about the texture, than anything.

Personally, I prefer rolled oats.. they cook faster and seem like you get more food in your bowl post cook. But, that's just my personal preference.

Thanks Lynn! Even with clean foods, sometimes there's as much staring at the package as with regular foods! I like speed as well. I'll try the rolled oats first!

Actually, my understanding is that nutritionally, they are NOT the same. Steel cut oats I think is supposed to have a lower Glycemic Index and more soluble fiber. Steel cut oats are cut into little pieces, rather than pulverized (they just look that way) and rolled oats have groats that are steamed and then flattened with a roller.

Thank you Morningstar! The more info the better! I'll keep that in mind when shopping this weekend! Starting my slow conversion is going to be time consuming!

Syzygy,

Congratulations for changing into clean eating. You are going to feel so much better! It will take a little time at first then you'll be a pro at it. You'll get the hang of it soon. I'm very proud of you.
