this is a very weird ?. can a steel barbell go in the dumbster?i have tried giving it away but it is out of date. it wont fit in my apartment.

Have you tried giving it away craigslist? How about a place like Replay Sports or Play it Again Sports?
The going rate for scrap metal is pretty high, you could take it to a scrap metal yard and see what they might give you for it. Check your local waste management district...they should have info on recycling metal.
The last thing I'd do is put it in a dumpster.

Don't throw it in the dumpster.
Try to find a metal recycling facility near you. They will take it (but you probably won't get paid for it, because some places only pay for large quantities, like by the ton).
That's what I did with some old iron weight plates that I wanted to get rid of.
Defiinitely don't add it to our landfill problem.
(I also wonder how it could be 'out of date'?)
