staying warm

Hello all! Merry Christmas--and have a blessed 2002!

I'm living in MN---soon to travel to London to study abroad! I have a horrible time staying warm and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I have enough body fat, but just can't stay warm.

I drink tea, coffee, or cappucino now, but then I'm constantly running to the bathroom.

Thanks for the help!

Well, you could have a thyroid problem. You probably are dressing warmly enough and exercising (other possiblities). Have you had a thyroid screening?

I went to college in Minnesota, and now work outside in all kinds of weather. I, too, get cold easily. Some tips:

1. Avoid caffeine! Herbal tea, etc. is good for keeping warm, but your body will devote tremendous energy to keeping your bladder warm when it is full, and it makes you feel cold elsewhere.

2. Layers, and Polartec, Polartec, Polartec. Polartec wasn't invented when I was in college, and now I practically live in it: socks, gloves, hats, tights, pullovers, jackets, neck gaiters, etc.

3. Keep your head warm. You lose 75-80% of your body heat out the top of your head. Inside, you can wear a warm cap, or even a baseball cap or bandana to help retain heat.

4. I also tend to jump in a hot bath when I'm cold. Exercise works as well, and keeps me warm for a while.

Hope these hints help! Stay warm!

P.S. Thank goodness for the invention of seat heaters in cars. Don't know how I lived without them before.

Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU for the suggestions, you two!!! I will definitely put them to use!!! About the bladder staying warm----when I fill it with coffee, what's going on? Why does your bladder need to stay warm?

I'll definitely be investing in some polartec---great suggestion---I'm sure it's expensive, but worth it.

Hats, too---I'll definitely keep these things in mind---I've already forgotten the first email suggestions, I was just so excited to hear some intelligent responses!!! Have a wonderful 2002!!!

One of my students gave me some slippers from Restoration Hardware called "foot duvets". They are so wonderful!! They are like down comforters for your feet. Perfect for laying around in, although just a little like walking with a pillow strapped to your feet when you move around :)
I love these, and my feet have never been so toasty, without being over heated. Soooo comfy!

For me, it's working out, that gets the blood pumping . . . good slippers . . . a sweater . . . and sweat pants . . . oh and good thick socks. I'm cold all the dog gone time. I've noticed that if I keep my trunk and upper body warm, my hands warm up.

Keta. :D

RE: Polartec

Thanks for letting me know about these places on the internet! Does anyone have any suggestions for staying warm in an office? I'll definitely have to purchase some polartec for after work, but how about when I'm there? Please let me know if you have any suggestions, and again, thanks to all for your suggestions. I'm going to shop for some warm slippers in a couple of days, so if anyone else has any favorites...please give me suggestions :). Happy New Year, all!

RE: Polartec

Just remembered this--my sister is always cold, too, and she used to wear these long underwear-type things. I think they were called "Cuddle Duds", and she bought them in Dillards or Sears, or some such place. They were not one piece things like regular long underwear--rather, they were two pants and a shirt, very thin, so layering was easy, and they were made of maybe a silk spandex mixture (???). She loved them because they were so light, and they were also pretty. She would wear them under clothes on a daily basis, and when she went skiing. They made me too hot, but I, unlike you, am always warm...
Hope they still carry these (in the lengerie department) of any major department store. Maybe give them a call first so you don't waste time checking around!
Wendy

Great

I just went and bought some cuddleduds at Marshall Fields! I'm so excited. They seem to be comfy and hopefully they'll be warm, too. If these work I'm in your endebted to you!!! Have a great night!

RE: Polartec

I've seen these, or at least something similar, at Penneys.
I may just have to try them myself.
